cast your mind back a couple of seasons, when Young was known to be available and spurs and villa were the front runners for his signature. I even remember Young being quoted as saying he was a spurs fan an would love to sign for us. Can anyone remeber why villa beat us to his signature. Seems a big loss now, especially with no-one making the left sided spot their own.

Because they were prepared to pay more money than we were.

I wouldn't worry too much. I expect him to join either Chelsea or Man Utd soon anyway.

That's my recollection also. Remember that I think he cost £9.5 million, and had only been in the Premiership for half a season, it was a big transfer fee and a bit of a gamble.

It's only with hindsight that the money they paid for him seems reasonable. Villa took the risk and at the time paid what seemed like an inflated fee, their gamble has paid off. I don't think you can knock us for wanting to pay a little less than Villa did when he had about 2 Premier League goals to his name.

Back then he was far from proven, remember there have been a whole host of players who have moved from The Championship to The Premier League without much success. For example Routledge and Nugent, maybe you could even add Bale to that list. He's developing significantly at Villa and looks a quality player.

Young was awesome for Villa, tis a shame we didnt grab him.
Yes he was unproven when we were interested, but its not like we havnt signed unproven players in the past.

We dropped a bollock not signing him for sure, fair play to Villa they took a gamble on an expensive young player and it paid off

His basic was £30k a week on top of the transfer fee,not sure how much we offered. I remember being a bit surprised that we didn't try harder to get him, but, as we had Lennon & Steed on the flanks with Keane / Berb/ Defoe upfront Jol probably thought we didn't did him and wouldn't get as many games...... plus O'Neil is charmer.

I do recall West Ham put a bid in of £8m,bet he's glad he dodged that one

I don't blame Spurs for missing out on Young, it seemed like a lot of money at the time. Well done Villa for seeing enough in him to stump up the cash.

Alot of people on here were well glad we didn't spend £10m on him, especially as he wasn't left footed and we had Lennon.

Also the sad fact is he probably wouldn't have developed as well without O'Neill's guidance. Agree with the poster above that I fully expect him to be the next Barry, Berbatov saga next summer when Chelsea, United, Liverpool and City come calling...

This is the second season in a row where he has been one of the best players in the league. He really is a brilliant player and one of few non-Spurs players I really enjoy watching.

At Watford I didn't see him developing into the player he is now. Didn't really rate him too much so wasn't too fussed when we didn't sign him, but since last season he really has shown what he's about. His crossing and final ball has been excellent and he's adding goals now, good luck to him.

As someone mentioned though he has developed under O'Neil, not sure his progress would have been as rapid if he came to us at that time.

If he had scored two goals last night, and the winner in the dying seconds, would you have posted this?

Probably not.

But he did score two goals last night, and a fantastic winner. I can't see many of our players completely fooling Lescott in the 94th minute, away at Everton to score the winner, only seconds after Everton had shocked them with a late equalizer.

And it's not like this was his first good game. He's been consistently good now for 18 months. The dude had 17 assists, 8 goals last season and he is well on his way to better that this season.

p.s.: you meant to say hadn't but wrote had.

Two footed, pace, great final ball and the ability to beat himself off to a webcam. He has got it all.

Yep, I did.

Ah yea I know he has been consistently good, but at the time he was linked with us I seem to remember a certain fella by the name of Aaron Lennon was playing his socks off as well.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to have Young at Spurs, but we dont have him, so we have to make best use of what we have, and I have to say, having Lennon when he is on form is enough for me.

I like Lennon and I'm ok with us missing out on Young, but Young is on a different level than Lennon.
