After going to Wembley to see the Spurs v Pompey FA Cup semi and Newport County lose to York last year in the FA Trophy final I finally enjoyed a day at the famous stadium.
On Sunday I saw my other team (Newport) beat Wrexham 2-0 in the Conference playoff final.
County got relegated from the old 4th division in 1988 and went bust the following year. Reformed entirely thanks to fans and started 9 levels lower. We were not allowed to play in Wales (let alone Newport) as the Welsh FA wanted us to join the League of Wales. County refused and played at Moreton in the Marsh (Gloucestershire) which meant a 3 hour round trip for home games. We slowly climbed the leagues and eventually won a High Court battle against the FAW, returning to Newport. Not long after the local council sold the ground for housing and we were stuck in a truly awful athletics stadium (with no pubs nearby!!!).
Two seasons in the Conference and a move to share with the town's rugby team (bigger, nicer stadium with lots of pubs in the vicinity) have culminated with us regaining our place back in the football league.....25 years after losing it, and, in our centenary season.
And to make it all the sweeter for me County's manager is WHL old boy, Justin Edinburgh.
Took my young kids on Sunday and for the first time ever they saw their old man cry....and I wasn't the only emotional grown man there.
