Now I have heard a few views on this subject. I think the general concensus was that even if we win the CL we would still have to qualify via a top 4 prem finish to get into the CL again but I have just read this paragraph on the beeb from last nights game report :-

"However the club's European progress gives him another potential route into next season's competition. Currently fifth in the Premier League, they face a battle to qualify through a top-four league position but winning the Champions League would secure automatic entry into next season's group stages."

So if we win We go through or is this journo confused aswell

This has been talked about, and the facts are, if we win, we take a CL qualifying p[lace from the league. So if we win, whoever finishes 4th will not get CL football.

I think if we won, we go into the qualification rounds.

That is not the general consesus at all mate. If a team wins the CL they are guarenteed a spot in the next years competition, at the detriment of the team in the final CL qualification place in their domestic league

Amongst the peeps I have spoken too it was the general concensus. I am not too hot on the rules and regs for CL qualification myself. I heard that the rules for qualification had changed and that Liverpool were the last team to gain entry to the CL via winning the competition?

Liverpool were the last team to gain entry to the CL without it being at expense of another team from their domestic league.

I still maintain that the fairer thing is for the league position to be the only decider. I don't think its fair that a club who finishes 4th be denied by a team that, although they have won the CL, have not been good enough in the league. I was dead against Liverpool getting it when they won.

Its the CL mate, you can't have a Champions League if the competition champions are not in it. Would look absolutely dire

Surely the team that wins the CL should be in it next year to defend their title.

It would be stupid to replace the current holders with a team that finished fourth in their league CHAMPIONS league.

How could the Champions of the CHampions league be relegation to Europa football the following season? it would make the tournament look mickey mouse compared to domestic leagues to value a fourth place finish in higher regard than winning Europe's elite competition.

Say for example Chelsea won the CL and we came fourth at their expense, although pissed off at missing out I would have no complaints as they'd deserve the spot not us.

The whole point is that its a competition made up of the teams that have fought for the top positions in their respective leagues. Its just seems unfair to me that a team fights and finishes 4th and then gets the prize taken away from them by someone who finished below them in the league. So as much as you could argue that it would be Champions defending their crown it could also be a team playing based on a 5th place finish or lower.

I suspect though that because we are in the competition this is not debate that can be rationally had right now....but when Arsenal reached the final and we almost made fourth a lot of fans were curiously against the idea that 4th place teams lose out.

I think it's crazy that we get 4 English teams in the Champions league.

3 english teams and 1 french team

Have to admit that the prospect of an all english final is no way near as appealing as an english vs european team.

Down to the apparent strength of the league though. The last few seasons have imo justified this with the contribution the english teams have made to the competition. Always reaching the latter stages of the comp.

I think winning the champions league supersedes your domestic league finish.

The Champions league is set up to be the pinnacle of European club football, winning it is supposed to be the biggest prize possible. To say that someone who finishes fourth in their domestic league deserves to be in the competition more the holders of the cup is crazy in my view and would severey undermine and devalue the Champions League if that ruling were in place.

Personally I think like with the Everton/Liverpool scenario the winner of the CL should transcend the league the team comes from and not effect births from that country. So there should be births given to nations depending on their rankings i.e. France may have 3 currently whilst England and Spain have 4 and a single Champions group stage place should be reserved for the winners of the tournament (it just so happens that 9 times out of 10 the winners of the CL will also be automatic qualifiers via their respective league anyway also)

As for the time Arsenal played Barca in the final, I was pissed off that the ruling had been changed after the Everton/Liverpool situation but I don't see how anyone could have rationally argued we deserved to be in the CL and Arsenal in Europa had they won it and we came fourth.

The bottom line is a CL win is a far greater achievement than a fourth place finish in the league and should be rewarded as such.

The only real argument is that fourth place should STILL be given a play off birth even if that gives a nation 5 teams in the competition potentially.

But for my money, the holders of the Champions League need to be in to defend their crown the following season regardless, even if they were relegated from their own domestic league they should be able to defend their CL crown.

We can win it.. we just need teams that are not as good as us to knock out the teams better than us...

I dont. Our league is superior to any other. We have 6 teams that wouldn't look out of place in the Champions League. Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal being the top 3, Spurs are now in the QF and have clearly shown we belong, Man City would do well in the CL and Liverpool are one of the most decorated clubs in Europe.

I agree. Infact there is/was a far greater argument to UEFA re-assigning the CL place taken from Serie A to our league rather than giving it to the Germans.
