Sorry could not agree less. I think a game against a third rate team was a great chance for him. If he has pace he had lots of chances to take on the full back. He had 2 or 3 people around him because he kept drifting into the middle. He played short passes and didn't look like he wanted to take anyone on. He gave the ball away and for me the best part of he's game was tracking back.

I am not saying he was a waste of money but he would need to improve a lot. I have a feeling he will be a player for next season and Townsend will take over the right wing spot.

Unbelievable

Im sorry but what exactly did he do wrong tonight?!

People bashing the guy are fuckwits who know fuck all about how talented this kid actually is.

He isnt worth £30m. He's probably worth more.

Edit: he got an assist tonight too. Didnt Eriksen do that too against Norwich and get bummed for it? Double standards. (Disclaimer: im not putting eriksen down there, i think he's awesome)

Unfortunately there are a lot of fuckwits around here these days. I hate reading all the negative, retarded posts in the matchday threads. The worst was probably the shit people were posting about Rose early on, when he's been excellent in pretty much every game.

jeez Louise........the guy hasnt trained much, has a couple of cameo's and this was his first full game. He's only 21 years old and is getting to know his team mates. This is a very harsh judgement and a little bit premature.
He is a very good player. I watched a lot of Serie A last season and he was consistently good for Roma. A top quality player and he just needs time.

I say this as a mahoosive fan of the lad so probably just a tad biased but it took 3 yrs for GB to show any signs of life. Different circs etc but let's give Lamela more than the 5 minutes he's currently been with us eh?

Good touch, always making himself available and willing to work hard to help his teammates and a very nicely weighted one time pass to get JD in for the first goal (a beautiful finish by the by). If that's him being underwhelming or a disappointment in his first proper outing for us then I can live with that.

Eriksen might be making him look bad in comparison tbh. He's a little dynamo he is. Wowsers. Just one klarsy footballer. No wonder Ajax gave him the keys to the car at only 18.

I spoke to an Argentinian friend of mine about Lamela a few days ago, but the conversation only lasted about 10 seconds before getting cut short. The only 2 things he said to me were that he's a hell of a talent and works very hard tracking back.

I thought I had misheard the tracking back comment as we were being interrupted at the time and it's not what I expected of him, but I'm really glad to see that he's putting in the graft. I can't wait to see him spin his magic regularly, but doing so on top of working hard for the team just makes the player so much more special imho.

Honest question: Do you guys think AVB saw enough to have him start against Cardiff?

I personally think Townsend will start against Cardiff since it's away and then have Lamela start on Tuesday against Villa to give him a match against an EPL side. Then, reassess for Chelsea as it will be at home and we're going to need a lot of creativity to get a win.

Players adapt at different speeds. Eriksen has come in and speaks English and knows Jan and there is probably more in common with the Dutch league and PL style of play then Serie A and the PL. Whereas Lamela who is a shy sensitive lad - certainly came across on Italian TV whenever I have seen him interviewed - will probably take a little more time. Believe me this boy is bloody good and he needs fans to stay off his back. I remember watching him last season at Roma and thinking I would love him in a Spurs shirt but the way he is developing, he is going to be a RM, Man City, PSG type of target and out of our league. I cant believe we bought him! (y)

I watched the game last night and it was a very tidy performance. I thought he followed AVB's instructions to a T. You could almost hear AVB saying - 'keep possession, dont give the ball way with silly passes, I dont want to see Hail Mary's, cover your FB, play a little narrow and cut in to support the forward and be economical. I know how good you are kid but I want you to integrate slowly. Leave the fireworks for later.'

I think that's spot on and what will happen tbh.

Was hoping he would be a bit more direct last night and only really saw 1 glimpse of that towards the end.

Still lacking match fitness

I thought his touch was brilliant and I especially like that he plays with his head up and looks for the pass. I think he and Naughton had a pretty good understanding considering it was their first game together. But yes, I though there was times where he'd turned inside a defender and I was willing him to go forward, but he'd lay it off to Holtby/Dembele.

Probably nothing more than a confidence thing, which will grow in time I'm sure. We've been fortunate that Eriksen and Paulinho have hit the ground running and look settled already, I'm sure Chiriches will be the same, so it's just the other 3 that may take a little bit of time - Soldado is getting there, Lamela and Chadli just need to loosen up a touch I think.

Lovely little assist for Defoe from Lamela anyway, perfectly weighted first time ball.

Have to disagree there. Bale started really well in terms of actual performances right from the off - 3 goals in his first 4 starts for Spurs including a great free kick against Arsenal. He then got a bad injury.

He is very young and probably doesn't speak much english, thankfully Villas-Boas and a few of the coaches and players speak Spanish.

Think it will take him at least 3 months to settle on and off the field

I think you're right, although I'd be furious if Townsend plays against Chelsea. I have a feeling they'll be parking the bus and Townsend because he's a moron (I still like him) will just take those 30 yard shots again which hurt nobody other than fans behind the goal.
Lamela would look for the pass and just do more for the team

Calm down buddy, I think Lamela will be great as well.....just saying GB started well for us and he had just turned 18, that's all. I agree with most on here that Lamela just needs time to bed in.

The £30m price tag is a big tag to live up to. No he didn't set the pitch alight last night, but he didn't make any glaring mistakes. He was tidy, and was there at the back when needed.

All in all I think that he had a reasonable first start, and by not making any glaring mistakes shows that is nerves can handle the billing.

Culturally though, we are a world apart from Spain & Latin America. We are more alike Northern Europe, and so is therefore a lot easier players like Eriksen fit in, along with the fact that his English is not great, and the only other Spanish speaking player is another Newbie, who I hasten to add hasn't fully found his feet yet either.

Just because he has not taken on 4 or 5 players an scored a wonder goal on his full debut after 3 weeks at the club, all of a sudden he is nothing special.

How many of you would still be with your wives or girlfriends if your first performance was what you were judged on?? ;)
