The £30m price tag is a big tag to live up to. No he didn't set the pitch alight last night, but he didn't make any glaring mistakes. He was tidy, and was there at the back when needed.

All in all I think that he had a reasonable first start, and by not making any glaring mistakes shows that is nerves can handle the billing.

Culturally though, we are a world apart from Spain & Latin America. We are more alike Northern Europe, and so is therefore a lot easier players like Eriksen fit in, along with the fact that his English is not great, and the only other Spanish speaking player is another Newbie, who I hasten to add hasn't fully found his feet yet either.

Just because he has not taken on 4 or 5 players an scored a wonder goal on his full debut after 3 weeks at the club, all of a sudden he is nothing special.

How many of you would still be with your wives or girlfriends if your first performance was what you were judged on?? ;)

I think Lamela will actually benefit from not being the only player we spent big money on this summer. If he was the sole £30m purchase amongst a few £5-8m buys, I think the pressure/spotlight would be on him a lot more. The meeja seem to be leaving him alone so far - prefering to focus on Eriksen's brilliance and Pauilnho's, well, ultimate coolness.

Last night was too easy for any judgements on anyone to be made. When Lamela was on the ball his touch and composure was excellent imo. Don't forget the lad's only just arrived, not started a game yet, only just started learning English... all a bit weird for him. You can see the quality is there. He will be excellent.

Not his fault that we also happen to have signed Modric MK II for comparitively peanuts...

I was at the game last night & watched Lamela closely, you can see his ability on the ball straight away, the way he shifts it to the exact place he wants to. He also moves with the ball at a high speed with ease. Lovely through ball to Defoe for the finish and I thought he had a good game. People who are criticising him already need to wake up a little bit and realise that this game was basically a training match and we didnt even get to 2nd gear.

I think give him a few more games and he will become more confident & we will see the player we have bought. I think one thing you can see is that he is a confidence player, whereas Eriksen I think seems more mature considering they are pretty much the same age.

I also agree with Snarf and think that Townsend will start against Cardiff and Erik will come off the bench for the last 20 mins!

Sorry could not agree less. I think a game against a third rate team was a great chance for him. If he has pace he had lots of chances to take on the full back. He had 2 or 3 people around him because he kept drifting into the middle. He played short passes and didn't look like he wanted to take anyone on. He gave the ball away and for me the best part of he's game was tracking back.

I am not saying he was a waste of money but he would need to improve a lot. I have a feeling he will be a player for next season and Townsend will take over the right wing spot.

Are you trolling?

Sometimes I come on to this forum and just wonder what goes on in some people's heads! How the bloody hell can anybody even begin to criticize Lamela after one game? I thought he displayed an understated and controlled quality. You could simply tell just by watching his touch, his movement and his attitude that he is not just a top player, but a potentially elite player. He has a touch of the Bale/Ronaldo about him. He is physically imposing, he just looks the part in every way, he glides around the pitch, has a great touch, can see a pass and is technically brilliant. Did Bale really look as good as that at 21?

He did everything right without really taking any risks but overall I thought he looked just as I hoped he would, like a star in the making.

Some people are just clueless.........

He's a wing forward in a 5-2-3-1, a left footer on the right side, his role is mainly to cut inside. Tromso sat so deep there was no space for him to skin defenders. What I did see was a player with really quick, snappy passing and intelligent movement. I said a few times last night he kept calling and signalling for quick balls into feet with his back to goal and 2 or 3 defenders around him. I read that as a player with confidence in his skill on the ball. He's not an average PL player who needs space and an option in front of him, he controls and moves the ball so quickly he can work in zero space and pass 'round the corner' with either foot.

It was only holtby who seemed quick thinking enough to pick him out, some of the others seemed scared to release a pass to someone in such a tight space, but once Eriksen came on Lamela really had a friend out there. He's going to open so much more space for us when we start using him for the give and go, because he will draw defenders in and instantly take them out of the game with quick offloads. Eriksen will love him as will Paulinho and Soldado and he'll be most effective when we up the tempo, which we didn't really do last night.

He doesn't play in a narrow window in front of him, he plays in 180 degrees, pinging the ball off at tight angles and he'll be very hard to mark because of it.

He's nothing like Bale and he's not a winger, he's something much more cultured than that

Lamela and Eriksen are both immense, the first touches of these players makes Paulinho look shit, which he isn't, just a point!

Eriksen however has so far looked better admittedly, but thats brilliant that there is already so much competition. I mean look at Gylfi and Holtby, both had good games in last two and that level of competitiveness can only improve the team... worry for Lennon though.

It's posts like this that make me wish the Internet would just end.
Such a poor understanding of....everything.

Bale took apart Inter Milan the European champions aged 21.

But listen, I like Lamela and think he will be awesome. His assist last night was great and it was a solid performance.

Nah Bale was almost sold off. Harry saved his career and we got 85 mill.

No, Bale started really well, then got long term injuries and was nearly sold off a year and a half later. We're talking here about how players start at their new clubs in the first few appearances eg. Lamela.

Bale's goal at Fulham was a delight. Keane flick on, Bale steaming in and giving the keeper the eyes. Awesome.
