I think he was always going to sign a new contract and for me signing so quickly after qualification for Champions League says that he didn't want to be distracted by talks when we still had our main target to achieve.
Once accomplished it was simply a matter of signing the contract.

Still fantastic news and this lad is going to get better and better.

If it was so simple he'd have done it before no ?

Or do they make him initial every page (x 2 copies) :)

Am I the only person feeling a twinge of cynicism?

Bale signs his new contract five minutes after we qualify for the Champions League - coincidence? I don't think so. Had we lost and finished 5th, I have a strong sense that Gareth 's pen would have stayed in his pocket.

Still, we are where we are. He's the most talented young wide player in British football and he's with us.
Am I the only one who really doesnt care whether it was cynical or not. Bale. 4 Years. Champions league.

It could be Bale who wanted to wait until after we'd secured 4th before signing, but it could also be that he signed last week and the club wanted to wait to announce it after our season was over...may-be trying to give the fans a lift if we'd finished 5th. Whatever the reason for the timing it's great news for Tottenham.

For all those who were panicking about the alleged interest from OT, I hate to say I told you so, but I did say no news was actually pretty good news, and it was probably being negotiated as we spoke (or panicked,as the case may be). I believe this regime knows it's business.

Great news.

I felt that making CL would be the key to not only attracting high quality players but keeping the great ones we have. Great news. And I guess Sir Chewing Gum will need to find a new feeder club.

Not one jot! With you all the way, DiscoD.

Season ends, we offer our stand-out youngster a new deal, great news for everyone. No conspiracy needed, just plain old common sense really.

Bale should have just not signed it and then not looked like a cynic, eh?

I dont see it as cynical, I see it as the first example of the drawing power of the Champions League for Spurs.

So? We all knew until we made Champion's League that our best and brightest were poaching material. And if Bale had CL aspiration, then I would have been disappointed but I couldn't fault him. And we tried to sell him to Forest 3 months ago - I imagine that didn't play well with him.

To be honest, I don't care, even if the below isn't true, but this is for you cynics :

Gareth Bale has spoken of his delight after signing a new four-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2014.

One of the stars of the second half of the season, Gareth has lit up the Lane with a series of barnstorming performances down the left flank.

In doing so, he's picked up a host of personal awards and ultimately helped the team qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

And Gareth, 20, was quick to point out that his new deal was signed and sealed before fourth place was secured by our 1-0 win at City on Wednesday night.

"It was actually agreed a while ago and I signed last week," said Gareth.

"The club is going in the right direction and I'm delighted to be here.

"It's been great to get back into the side and do well and to top that off by qualifying for the Champions League is fantastic. It's an unbelievable achievement for everyone at the club.

"The lads are all looking forward to playing Champions League football. We can't wait for next season."

The season's not quite over though - we could yet finish third if we manage to beat Burnley on Sunday and Fulham topple Arsenal at the Emirates.

"We'll give our all at Burnley, try to win and you never know," he smiled. "It's about one final push and we'll see what happens."
