I agree with the OP but over the next few seasons not necessarily this one. I think we'll do ok this season but am really excited about 2-3 seasons time when our young squad is fully complete and has another seasons added experience. Add the new stadium and some more youngsters breaking through and things look very bright.

A point I haven't seen discussed on here is - how is our attacking midfield affected if we have to move N'jie or Son up front? Chadli, Eriksen and Lamela hardly created a lot last season but we were lucky enough to have Super Kane up front.

With N'jie or Son up front we'd have faux strikers relying on a fairly lacklustre attacking midfield to provide scoring opportunities.

Eriksen created the third most amount of chances of any player in the league. We overall created the 5th most amount of chances and funnily enough scored the 5th most amount of goals.

Obviously Kane was a big contributor to the goals but we had two other midfielders who scored double figures.

Eriksen certainly went of the boil towards the end of the season but Chadli's scoring was pretty consistent throughout and would have been greater had he not had to miss part of the season.

Im all for being realistic but your post is erring as much on the side of doom as the OP's is optimistic.

As you said, it's a season of 'what ifs'. I guess that applies to every team, bit more so when you don't address key areas.

As a lot of teams havent done - Chelsea didnt (defence) We wont know if Liverpool have or not properly as they have a huge influx of new players again, Man U probably did but so would we have with the money they do, Arsenal didn't (Striker).

The things that get me wound up about posts like this is that we DID address a number of key areas. Just not all of them, like most clubs yet you make out like we are the only club to be left short anywhere and that the business we did do over the summer was worthless.

Right. Maybe it's why I'm not all that down in the dumps about it, besides not taking this football stuff all that seriously anymore. The fact we have such a young squad is a positive in these less than ideal times. More wriggle room and adaptability. Certainly more than if we had the same problems but with players all well into reaching a decade of first team football already. No chance of changing habits then.

SO much potential. But thats all it is. We need Lloris, Alderwerald & Vertonghan to use their experience and lead this young team properly. If Dier, Bentaleb, Alli, Son, Kane fulfill that potential then yes, we could be on the verge of something a little bit special.

If we get up around the top 4 or are close to it by January, then we have a slight chance as long as we address the problem areas in the squad, like DM and striker, with quality. Expecting Levy to do it though is like expecting a dog to talk words. Aint gonna happen.

In my opinion, we'll be lucky to get 7th.

Having watched us this season so far and last I would be amazed if we get 8th.

Son could be amazing though. I genuinely think our season hinges on him.

No pressure then...

Hell Yeah!

why not? Better to live in hope than fear.
It's certainly not fear. More like bored anticipation of the inevitable. Better to be pleasantly surprised than get your hopes up for no reason.

Isn't that the saddest thing. It's so bloody boring.
I think the saddest thing is that I forget the reality of our dull football about an hour before every game, then less than a minute in it all comes flooding back.

We used to be the entertainers of the Prem not so long ago. League positions weren't as good, but did just as well on the trophy front and at least we were usually, erm, entertaining.

I can still be entertained by a clinical and efficient display, but we don't even get that.

I think history tends to airbrush many things. Yes, we had some great runs under Harry, with some great football, but then there were also periods where we couldn't score at home to lowly teams, plenty of times.

I just hate to instant result, or instant entertainment thing a lot fans desire. Sometimes it takes time to build something. Starting from solid foundations. Maybe Poch will get it to click together, maybe he won't, but I sure as hell am going to let him work with this extremely young team for a few seasons before I judge him.

I'm working Sunday. But I will still get to see the game, being paid to watch Spurs, living the dream. I am still not so enthused. I got a massive kick out of seeing H bang in that goal for England. He is the real deal.

We have one of the best strikers/players in the entire league. A league awash with money and he is literally one of our own. He cost nothing. A player that could genuinely be considered a 50m pound player, and what happens? We flog him like a cart horse.

I don't know. Maybe Son is the answer. Maybe Townsend too.

But we are so narrow. It's like having Shearer and playing him in the Beardsly/scholes role. Of course he can do it. He is quality. But it's a waste.

Imagine playing 2 up front. Cant believe I'm typing that as a Spurs fan.

I'm wih the OP, I think our squad is extremely exciting and that we will continue to trim it in January and strengthen.

I don't think A top 4 finish will happen this season but I think we will push hard for it

Come on people, we need a positive note to our season. Our club has been run well, we have a good coach and a talented group of players.

I was upset by the Berahino saga and the failure to get support for Kane but I am feeling much more upbeat with Son and Njie on board. In my view we can take the low road and all that comes with that - negativity, criticism, being Spursy to the extreme etc or we can take the positive route. I really believe that this is a group of players we can be proud of and we need to back them to the hilt. Not pull them down week after week with the criticism that I see constantly on SC match threads and so on. Lets throw a little bit of unconditional love around for a change and watch the magic start to flow :D

That's a very good point really.

Sorry to harp on about the 90's, but we were dire back then and we gave that unconditional love and support back then.

It's all about the expectation levels really. I think the only thing we should really expect is to see this team improve and I think we're beginning to see this.

Regardless, the team didn't pick themselves, so they don't deserve the negative vibes. Positive vibes will only help to see that improvement sooner rather than later.

I agree with that, I can see no way at all that we will finish in the top 6:
For each of the last 6 seasons I really believed we could get top 4 but just don't see it this year. The Sunderland game is vital, get a win and the season really gets going. If we lose however then Poch is going to be under pressure from the press

Maybe you want to check out how awful teams like Utd and Liverpool actually are.

We have just as much chance as either of them.
