RIP

Just goes to show that it doesn't matter who you are or what you've got it doesn't really mean a whole lot if you feel like shit. They say 70% of people have some form of mental illness however slight or life affecting it is.

There seems to be something strange about this. He was on the BBC yesterday and colleagues have been saying how he was planning a game of golf next week with some of them and looking forward to Christmas and was generally very cheerful.

He was also full of enthusiasm for the Welsh side and their success and seemed to be looking forward to even more success. He was doing such a good job with them.

Did something unexpected happen late yesterday to turn his world upside down or was he hiding something from everyone? His body language was fine, no outward signs of depression. I'm finding this mystifying.

Perhaps he was putting on a good front CH.

As Dougal said we only see the public persona. There could have been something deeply troubling him. It's wrong to speculate until we know facts.

Perhaps he was putting on a good front CH.

Then he would have been the best actor in the world and it would have been an Oscar-winning performance.

It's very difficult to hide all the signs of depression.

My uncle hid it very well from us till we found him one morning in bed after an overdose.

Incredibly sad news, was a model pro and was at the start of doing an excellent job with Wales.

From what I've read about suicidal people is that they put on a front, they seem fine outwardly. Most cases of suicide see people doing ordinary things, seemingly fine. Then... they're gone. Must make matters all the worse for those around them.

Suicide is an incredibly selfish thing to do, at the end of the day. You leave behind an absolute mess for your family, your kids, etc.

It's a tragic, tragic loss to Wales, who finally looked to be on the up and up. But more of a tragic loss to his wife and kids.

RIP Gary.

You can only really make that accusation if a person is of sound mind when they commit the act. I imagine this is rarely the case.

Judging by comments from people that were with him yesterday re how he was looking forward to certain things, it could be that, out of the blue, a personal secret was about to be made public, or even a sex game gone wrong ala Hutchence. Judging by the chats he was having with Dan Walker yesterday, it would seem odd that he'd commit suicide, although on the flip side, he'd be unlikely to say 'I'm gonna end it later'.

Weird. Will see what comes out later. Terrible news.

Unless there's a chemical imbalance in the brain causing depression (and that would show somewhere in the person's body language) there has to be an underlying reason for someone to go to the desperate lengths of taking their own life.

Yes, it is possible he did hide his darkest feelings and if he planned doing this in advance, he could well have outwardly made a huge effort to conceal his intentions and depression. It still makes me wonder why though?

Sorry, but there's no excuse for taking your own life like that. When I heard he had died, I was genuinely saddened. But now that I know he did it himself, I have no sympathy for him.

My thoughts and sympathies go out to his family that now have to live with the fact that he decided he no longer wanted to be around for them. And especially to the poor soul who found him who is now probably scarred for life.

Stupid comment to make.

This is what I'm worried about, but I really hope it's not the case as this is going to be difficult and messy enough for his family as it is.

I would mention that one of the footballers paying tributes to Gary Speed on the news today attempted suicide himself once, some years ago. It never hit the media and those who knew about it didn't leak it (not a Spurs player btw).

The signs had been there though and he felt he had his reasons at the time.
