Before a ball is kicked, what will define a successful season IYO for 2016/17?

I want to see us be in contention for the whole season. I dont think it will be possible to compare a points tally this year as, again, it will be a very open league with lots of points taken from each other and no one running away. So a push for the title, maybe not expecting to win it but finish in the top 4 again. Better runs in the cups and progress to the KO stage in the CL. I'd love to see us win the FA Cup, lost too many semi's since 91.

The other thing that will determine success is seeing our youngsters flourish while playing exciting football. knowing we can win any game from any position and that it is always possible

To be honest, securing a second consecutive season in the Champions League would be a major step up for the club. Playing in the biggest club competition in the world, in the inaugural season at our epic new stadium, would be massive.

As such, getting to the quarter finals of this seasons CL would help even more.

For the first time, I'm willing to let FA Cup and League Cup slide this season to facilitate this.

Agree. I'd love us to win a trophy, but to finish in the top four again in an even more competitive league than last year will be a very big achievement imo. Also would be nice to make a good go of the CL and show we can compete.

Basically, proving that this isn't another short lived false dawn will be enough for me this season.

If we finish top four I'll be extatic. Looking at how high the bar is this season, I think if our boys put in their all, whatever the results, and we finish top four we can't really ask for more. Anything more and it's gravy!

Top five, it's going to be tougher this year even with Leicester out of the running.

Game time for more youngsters and some of our own.

Inventive creative and satisfying football as well as the Pochettino press.

More goals.

More clean sheets

If we get the two above results will take care of themselves.

Spurs to make us proud wherever we finish.

Less emphasis on results and more on performance.
over a season the latter produces the former.

Win the Fair Play League.(Is it still going?)

I know the game is about glory and silverware, but I think this season especially, it is important to finish in the top 4 again above all else. Preferably by being in contention for 1st, rather than scraping in of course.

Think this season (as others have said) with all the big name managers and massive spending around us, it would be a real statement to all if we were to still sit in around 2nd or 3rd by the end . So that would for me be a real successful season. CL run will get priority over the other cups as it increases our global exposure and it's what the players want to play in.

Afraid FA and League cups will have to be bedding grounds for the younger talent coming through, but I think that serves us well enough.

I think we need to finish top 4 minimum and in order to ensure other clubs don't start circling the likes of Kane / Ali / Eriksen / Dier / Lloris etc we need to show we are capable of challenging. What Poch is doing is breeding a team of winners which is great - but with that comes ambition. If we aren't looking like a team improving each year (we challenged last year and finished top 4 so need to again) then we run the risk of big money coming and cherry picking our best. Unfortunately our best is right through our team from back to front as we have a fantastic first 11.

In the same breath, with that being said, because we have a number of fantastic players there is no reason why we shouldn't be hitting those targets. I look at the teams from last year and honestly think we are better than them. When you start to look at the players being bought for big money would you honestly say all of them are head and shoulders above what we have? Mane and Wijnaldum? No. Kante - excellent - but would you happily swap him for Dier or Dembele? Happily? No. Xhaka? No. Stones? Rather the partnership of Toby and Jan. Bailly? Unproven. And see previous comment. Mkhirtaryan and Pogba? Perhaps. Sane? Would be a good option with the 3 we already have - but not enough to outright swap.

Point is that we have a good enough team to mix it with the rest. Could finish 1st, could finish 6th, understand that it will be tough - but we need to start thinking like a big club now as we have the players and soon will have a stadium to match anyone.

Oh and a good run in the CL - last 8 would be very good - but we need to wait to see our group I think.

FA Cup and top 4 - with the cup as the priority, been too long without a trophy and our commitment to cups has been nothing short of embarrassing for years now

Challenging for the title again. We might not win it but I think it is important we are in the mix again. We might finish top 4 but how we do that is as important. If we do it while challenging all season then that's fine. If we get top 4 while never being in the mix for the title I'd be disappointed.

We also need to get to the knock out phase of the CL but challenging domestically is more important

Qualifying again for the CL whilst already participating in it is the next target. That would show real progression.

But ultimately we need to win something to take a real step forward. Medals on the table time, guys...

With the money being splashed around elsewhere top 4 would be an excellent season. 5th would be okay, so long as it isn't a distant 5th. We have to show that we have reached the level where we can consistently compete with the big spenders.

Plus a good showing in the CL.

Win a trophy
Win a trophy
Win
A
Trophy

I don't even care what trophy it is. 9 years is too long to go without one and we've only got two more seasons after this one to keep the record going.

A satisfactory (realistic but ultimately a bit disappointing) season would be top 6, a decent run in both domestic cups, and getting through the group stages of the CL.

A successful season for me would be top 4, a trophy, and getting into the last 8 of the CL.

  • Finish Top 4- I wouldn't be too disappointed if we don't, but I really think we have to try and not get into a situation where we wait another 4 years (although in 2012 we weren't rewarded) to get CL.
  • Get out of the Group Stage in the CL- This would be a very good achievement IMO, especially as we'll almost certainly be in Pot 3.
  • Win a Cup- We have a stronger squad, so theoretically we should be able to cope better with 4 competitions. FA Cup might be difficult due to potential replays and the fact that matches occur during the business end of the season, but winning the EFL Cup should certainly be something we aim for.

Performances that consistently match those of last season. I don't care what anyone says, we were the best team in the league for most of last season, and I think if we can match the level of performance but take a few more opportunities in games then we will fare very well again.

I would love us to win the FA Cup (or other trophy), but I'm not going to use that as a marker of whether we've had a successful season or not.

On a serious note, top 4 finish, champs league knock out stages, and one of the cups.
