Before a ball is kicked, what will define a successful season IYO for 2016/17?

...Anyway for me this season I would say the below would be a success in my eyes..

- top 4 in the league and qualify again for CL
- last 16 of Champions League
- I would love to win a cup but I feel we will struggle on four fronts so not expecting anything from league or FA cup
- continue the attacking and exciting football and to see a few more of the academy lads become squad regulars
...

This.

Prove again that spending hundreds of millions is futile and counter productive.
Fuck finishing above arsenal. I'd be happy above City, Chelsea, United and Liverpool yet again just to shut the "experts" up.

Honestly, I'd just like to see development from our players, us to continue to hang on to the players that Poch wants. A continuation of the squad harmony and to beat last years points tally. If that finishes 7th so be it, our young squad could be consistent title challengers in a few years. I just want to see progression towards that aim.

I'd be over the moon with:

League: Top 4 again
CL: Reach knock out stages
Win either of the domestic cups, preferably the FA Cup (obviously)

I'd be happy if we're in the mix for the top 4 and it would be nice to do well in the CL but until we know who's in our group it's difficult to know what to expect. Same for the cups.

However, I am feeling very optimistic for the season ahead and think that we have a good chance of finishing higher than we did last season.:cautious:

Top 3 finish in the league and reaching the knockoutstages of the CL.

Lots of gametime for onomah, ccv, winks etc in the Cups for vital experience.

For me, its simple - play hard, play with passion, and be competitive in every game. Make me feel proud to be a supporter.

If they do those things, the results will come. But, if we get a bad bounce here, and there, I won't be disheartened.

My basic expectations for results are that this team should be in the mix for a top-4 spot, barring injury. But realistically that means anywhere from 1st to 6th. I would prioritize: League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup in that order. I'd like to see a decent run in the cups, but not at the expense of losing ground in the League - so a healthy mix of first team players and younger players like Winks, Onomah, Vickers, Edwards would be in my teams in the early cup games. If we lose early, but get those guys some games I'll be fine with it.

Cementing top 4 or a cup.

We should however be aiming to win the league. And throw the kitchen sink at the CL.

Improvement in our play and a more consistent level than last year from the start of the season. Finishing high enough so that the players want to stay and be part of this club rather than go to the highest bidder and we have to start again.

Securing a second season in the top four would be magical given the spending by Citeh, Man Ure and Chel$ea. That said i would love us to get to Wembley in a Cup final preferably the FA Cup.

I think I echo much of @mpickard2087's thoughts really. Would like to see us progress further as a team in a coached and tactical sense, press even better - or even smarter - show even more coherence and Pochettino has to address his major achilles heel, which is in game management and the turning over of winning positions - it is no coincidence that he has achieved this ignominious feat (of being the worst in the league for coughing up points) with two different teams.

I like that we have done very little business in this window, very little upheaval. I think Janssen is the perfect rotation for Kane, offers a very similar skill set, he's robust, will hold up, he works hard off the ball and can use both feet and head and is not scared to go in where it hurts to score goals. I think he fits the profile we needed to rotate with Kane better than some others we were linked with even if they were more one dimensionally superior, and he's only 22.

My initial opposition to Wanyama was not because I think he's shit, I don't, I think at what he does he's very competent, he's a very competent busy ****, and god knows I like a busy ****, and it's not that I thought Lesniak is a better busy ****, contrary to the opinion of some, it's that I thought that if what we are buying is a rotational busy ****, to fill in when Dier can't play or needs resting etc, then that is the kind of remit - i.e. a competent functionary - that a kid we've spent years preparing just for that role could fulfil. IE back up busy **** with a bit of "football" in them too. However, I have warmed a little to the idea, based partly on the sensible observation by someone in the (Wanyama) thread that this allows us to not need to buy any more CB's as it means Dier can drop back and play there when necessary - a position I ultimately see him excelling at - and hopefully, the very one dimensional nature of Wanyama (and I don't mean that as a sideways compliment in this case - I mean the fact that he is exceedingly focused and efficient at hunting and gathering - much in the Sandro mould) might mean that Poch is happier to play a more progressive "footballing" type like Winks or Onomah (or Bentaleb if by some miracle he stays) next to him sometimes, giving us a different "blend" of skills in CM.

But if this means we just constantly get two man variations of Dier/Dembele/Wanyama then my initial fears will possibly be realised. I think we will remain defensively pretty robust obviously (I accept being able to bring on Wanyama in the final third of games might mean we can address that "achiles heel" I spoke about - but it didn't at Southampton) but it will feel like we've stuck on 15 instead twisting and trying to evolve into a better footballing version of last season. I think offensively there were times when we needed a CM in there who was more zippy and progressive and defensively there were times last year when we needed a player in there who was more metronomic, would show for the ball and help us starve the opposition of latter game oxygen, rather than just shell back into the back line, dragging everyone back with him and elongating the game.

If the plan is to use much more of Winks, Onomah and Edwards, then I hope we don't make another signing. But if not, and they are only going to see a handful of minutes between them when the real stuff starts, then I wish we'd have added a "Tolisso" to CM and a "Gotze/Fekir" to the AM and genuinely improved our "footballing IQ".

And it is essential to see KWP's career move forwards this season, one way or another. Either a very carefully chosen loan where he will actually be used and appreciated or we off load Trippier/Yedlin and make him number 2 or 3, but he works every week with Poch and the first team with a definite view to being at least no.2 nest season.
