Based on last season, we have one; his name is Danny Rose.
Rose is really so much better than he ever was, but he wasn't without faults last season. It is silly to completely clear him of his faults and declare him godsent.
However, this thread isn't about Rose, it's about Davies. I clearly stated a year ago that we should not sign Davies, and I saw nothing of him last season to change my mind. If he were to leave, we would have to bring in a new LB since we need two, and I'd be fine with the chance to look again for the LB position. (I can't think of who we've got already who can and wants to play LB in addition to Rose).

People need to start realising the dearth of decent full backs in the current game.

I think Rose has become one of our most consistent players, not necessarily one of our best but I think he has the potential to be the latter as well.

I still think he steams in to challenges far too often, gives away silly free kicks etc, so he's certainly not without his faults. That said his improvement across the season was nothing short of spectacular.

Davies is a solid LB. For me lacks agility and speed to be top level at the position but I like how he plays in advanced areas and he's a tidy passer/crosser.

I dont believe for one second though that we need to be looking at doing any business at left back, either in or out.

He is not as dynamic as Rose but that does not mean he is a bad player. If I remember correctly, Rose was the recipient of quite a few strong challenges last season and he also covered the entire left channel in most of our games - that makes me almost certain that at some point Rose could get seriously injured due to our reliance upon him on the left side.

I would happily keep Davies as our second choice left back for that very reason. Also he has had a year with the club, he has played in the league before, he won't need time to adapt etc. Loaning him out would offer no benefit whatsoever, we should be encouraging him as a 22 year old left back in a young team, to fight for his place.

We have a lot of deadwood we need to sell, however Davies should not be anywhere near that list.

Very capable fullback, no need to get rid of him, many players should be in front of him before he goes.

I like Davies but he's just too slow for what we need.

Rose needs proper competition.

Davies arguably was just the competition Danny Rose needed. Hence why he upped his game and is one of the first names on the team sheet.

I can think of far worse back up LB options. Would be absurd to spend time messing with that position when got huge other issues to fix.

If Davies is too slow, which I probably agree with, maybe if he does start Poch could tweak his tactics to accommodate this, perhaps playing a left footed winger so Davies doesn't have to cover the entire left hand side.

Can't see it working now.

I still like Davies and I still like Fazio.

Not only that, but I just can't get my head around people who have watched football for years when they want to immediately move a player on after giving them only 1 year. Have you learned nothing from football? Not only that, but neither of them were totally crap, I'd say they were both about average.

I like the type of defender Fazio is, he can play football, he's not just a big lump at the back that is there to tackle and win headers. However, he always makes at least one big mistake in every game I've seen him play and he doesn't seem to know how to mark. Swansea away summed it up for me, he continually let Bony get in behind him and it was only because of Bony's finishing that they weren't out of sight by the time we pulled a late comeback.

Could he do better next season? Possibly but I thought he adapted about half way through last season. Much like Demichelis he took a few months to get to grips with the game in England but Fazio still makes a lot of mistakes because he gets the basics wrong time and time again.

I'd keep Davies though. Even if he doesn't come good for us, he's a decent backup. I think people on here forget sometimes that we're not Chelsea or City, we can't afford to have two top quality players battling it out for one position on the pitch.

Wouldn't bother me, we have Ogilvie who could be back up. Quite like the look of the Serbia U20 Lb as well (Antonov ?)

I agree. They are both very solid defenders. Not flashy, but effective. I was a big fan of Corluka and Dawson too for similar reasons. Not every defender can or should be a King or Verts.

Fazio's big overlooked strength is his organising. It's no coincidence at all that the only time our defensive unit looked solid last season (November to February) was when Fazio had an extended run.

I also agree that all senior players need at least 2 years before you can judge them. It's to our detriment that we have a ridiculously high turnover of players

How can you say it's better to have a bloke that's not played a single minute of senior football over an international LB who has a number of top flight seasons to his name? Younger =/= better
