Did anybody else think that he was a bit... rusty? I feel that he is still somewhat rusty.

very rusty, lots of misplaced passing, jogging back when someone got in behind him after getting caught out far too many times for the time he was on.

Didnt think he looked good at all, and wouldn't be getting back into the first team with that performance.
Luckily we have Leeds next so would give him a run out there and hope he has a much better game.

Yeah it's good to see Benny back, but I've only seen Naughton have one bad game, out of position. He keeps possession much better than Ekotto, AVB knows this.

I agree about Naughton getting a run at RB, but I don't think a rest is going to fix Walker. I feel he doesn't really understand his role as a LB (largely due to inexperience) and therefore has trouble fitting into it. I would like to see him play a few training games and friendlies as CB and LM so he can get a better idea of how a LB is supposed to interact with the rest of the team.

As backed up by Naughton's several passes to the advertising boards behind the opposition goal each game, more prominent than ever yesterday?

Ekotto was rusty and got caught out a little, but there was one moment, before we equalised, where he played on of his great cutting balls into the centre if the pitch for our midfield to take into space, I think Dembele received it. At that point I remembered just what we've been missing. Not one of our other defenders can pass like that in a way which takes opposition players out of the game and gives our midfield the momentum to drive on, only Ekotto. Modric used to benefit constantly from this and as Ekotto reemerges into our side I predict that our transition from defence to attack will seem far smoother than it has all season.

but he doesn't use possession as good as benny (on the left anyway)

plus he isnt at the level to defend by himself due to lazy bale, which benny doesnt get enough credit for.

BAE was poor yesterday but he was totally rusty and wasnt as fluid. That is totally understandable and he will be back to his best in a few games. He has to play though

Disagree with this BAE was integral to our passing game under Harry and if someone can be bothered to bring up the stats it would show this. He would see the ball as much as our CMs often more. Naughtons a RB, did a good job at LB but we need to play people in their right position.

Good to see him back and hopefully he starts in the cup with Naughton as right back.

BAE to the point as always :)

Spurs defender: Naughton’s ‘not a real left-back’

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is confident he will regain his first-team spot in the Spurs defence, stating that his right-footed rival Kyle Naughton is “not a real left-back”.

Assou-Ekotto has recently returned from a knee injury which ruled him out for four months and, having initially made his comeback in the FA Cup victory over Coventry, he was named on the bench against Manchester United on Sunday as Naughton started at left-back for the fifth league game in a row.

However, Assou-Ekotto replaced his team-mate in the 64th minute before delivering the left-wing cross which produced Tottenham’s equaliser – and he believes his natural advantages will prove decisive once he regains full match fitness.

“I’m not worried because obviously I can do stuff with my left foot that he [Naughton] can’t do,” said Assou-Ekotto. “He’s not a real left-back and I don’t think he has the same left foot as me, so I’m not worried about that.
“To come back in the Premier League is quite hard because it’s high-tempo, but sometimes it’s easier to play against Man United than against a team in the bottom half, so I think it was a good game for me to come back in.

“We can be happy with the result. We can have a positive attitude and say ‘okay, we got a 1-1 draw against Man United’ but at the same time we can be sad because we missed five good opportunities against them.
“But we did what they normally do to many teams – we scored in the last minute. If we see the game this way we can say that it’s a good point for us.”

Tottenham’s draw with the league leaders coincided with Arsenal’s defeat at Chelsea, but Assou-Ekotto says he and his team-mates have little interest in the Gunners’ fortunes.

“I don’t care, and I think we shouldn’t care about the other teams,” he said. “We have to be focused only on ourselves, and to have a target not to lose any games.

“Even if we only got one point at the weekend, maybe at the end of the season this point will be very important.”
