To defend Bentley, I still feel he has not settled into a role in the team. I think he feels he has to produce all the time when it might be better for him to make sure he does the simple things well and then go from there.

What he is really, really lacking is an overlapping full back. Gunter didnt look like he wanted to get near Bentley, nevermind overlap him, and as Bentley has no pace he needs that full back pushing forward and drawing men away.

For the prosecution though, that stepover he does every single time is rubbish. Even I learnt to stop doing it as I didnt have the skill to put the defender off balance. Its at times like these that he should give the ball and make a run off the ball.

He is really suffering because we dont seem to have a game plan. It seems a case of get the ball forward then hope someone comes up with something. Without a Modric type player we really lack a link up player and with the midfield's fear of supporting the lone striker yesterday we had no offensive threat

He doesn't half kick a ball from the top of a tower block into a skip well though

He needs to watch videos of Beckham, simple, he was/is? the next Beckham, and has almost as good of a cross, and similar attributes across the board, although Beckham is generally a better player.

I do agree that he would be better an overlapping fullback, but you can't blame Gunter, it's not his game, and he defends well, and it shouldn't be a necessity for a good right winger.

What I don't understand about Bentley though is how he pulls rank on every free kick, and then floats one in with very little pace.

This is how David Bentley should play on the right

Wow, Beckham was class wasn't he.

He had very good strikers and players to deliver the ball to in his favour though. How often has he done that at L.A Galaxy?

Im not going to take anything away from him, because each of the deliveries was a peach, but he was helped by the fact those in the box attacked the ball in the area's he put it in.

Bentley can swing in as many dangerous crosses as he likes, but if our strikers dont attack the ball - people will label his crosses shit.

Thats why the Bentley / RSC partnership at blackburn was so good.

If Berbatov was still at the club, I reckon Bentley would have had a fair few assists from crosses by now.

You can't just single out Bentley from last night. he was pretty awful but then look at jenas.. Hoofing the ball up the pitch when any half decent footballer would have put his foot on it had a look around and kept posession instead of surrendering it 5 seconds after getting it back. bentley was the same. Didn't look up before slinging in an overhit or sliced cross. he hasn't got the speed or skill to take on plyers and at the same time jenas is not capable of running with the ball without overrunning it or tripping over his own legs as he kicks the ball against the shins of 3 oncoming players.. they are poth abominations . As professionals that are being paid small fortunes they should be able to think about what they are doing and just keep possession or find an easy pass.... jesus... If this isn't happening then they aint never gonna be threading through balls to strikers making intelligent runs behind defences.... well not if those strikers are the couple of clowns that played yesterday. Sometimes it was like watching an under 9s kickaround. I don't blame Harry for putting out a weakend team... Imagine if any of our decent players got injured last night and we had to rely on that bunch of muppetts to drag us away from the relegation battle. The only players i thought that came out of yesterday with any positivity were dawson ( Solid and showed good leadership) GDS who did the best he could when surrounded by that shower and young Parrett who didn't look out of place at all......

I think with a little more solidarity in the middle in Palacios he might start to shine a little brighter. I also think some of you lot need to get a fucking grip.

Oh.. I have no doubt that Palacios is going to make a huge difference to our cause. i just don't think Bentley or Jenas should be anywhere near the pitch for the remainder of the season if we are going to avoid relegation.

I take your point that we need strikers to attack the ball, but good crosses are still good crosses 50% of the time and I'm sure the fans would appreciate that, but he rarely even gets the ball inside the box. Also, would you bust a gut, sprinting 50 yards just for Bentley to smash the ball into row-Z or run it out of play.

Bentley is rubbish when he has nothing to aim for. We had nothing in attack last night. Thats the reality of it. He isn't a player who is good at defending, so he needs to be playing attacking football. What could he have done better last night? All he had was Fraizer Campbell to aim for. Football is not about individuals, but a team of players that compliment each other. And we didn't have the right players to compliment Bentley last night.

like a skip, for example
