Bentley cost £90,000 per game

David Bentley's five games on loan from Tottenham will eventually cost West Ham in excess of £400,000.

With the loan deal between West Ham and Bentley's parent club having no get-out clause until 1st January 2012, the Hammers are therefore responsible for a percentage of the 27-year-old's wages until that date - a figure estimated to be close to the £450,000 mark.

Bentley, who arrived at West Ham on a season-long loan shortly before the transfer deadline, was ruled out for six months at the beginning of this month after undergoing surgery on his left knee. It is unknown whether this was due to a fresh injury or a recurring problem.

The former England winger's five performances constituted three substitute appearances and two starts. He failed to complete a full 90 minutes having been replaced on both of those occasions.

Well, we signed him for what, £15m? According to wikipedia he's played 62 times for us. So in just his transfer fee he's cost us £241,935 per appearance.

I for one am sad. Really hoped he'd do well for us. Had my reservations when he was too tired for the u21s, but he came to us and said the right things. Pity.

Yeah, we can't exactly crow too much about him being a waste of money for anyone else......

To me he is the worst signing in the history of our club.

He was never that great, stood out at Blackburn because he suited their style and was a big fish in a small pond but mostly lived of his hat trick against Man U. (Bailey scored a hatrick against man u for QPR once....didn't make him a world beater)

He was a good player but never worth the money we paid and he has been basically useless since signing, he wasn't at all what we needed at the time (we already had lennon) he didn't suit our style (we attacked with pace and he has none)

Can't wait for him to be sold, well not sold because he will no doubt go off on a free now. But wish we never signed him in the first place. One great goal against the scum is all his legacy for us will ever be worth talking about.

I have to agree, for the fee we paid the return we have got has been absolutely minimal. A pretty disasterous purchase.

I feel a bit sorry for Bentley, hes not a bad player at all. Hes wasted 3 good years of his career at Spurs. He had a decent season in 09-10 in the games he played, but they will be forgotten, which is fair enough, because you want more than decent from a 15 million pound player.

I think hes good at football but it just hasnt worked for him, i hope he moves somewhere soon and has a good career, hes a player who has to get into a rhythm and play lots of games consistently

Paolo Tramezanni? Helder Postiga?

Hell, I'd even argue Rebrov was a worse signing than Bentley.

He's the worst value for money. But he's in no way the worst signing. Ridiculous hyperbole.

That assumes he did nothing in those 62 games that was financially beneficial to us, as I recall he was pretty much an ever present in our run in to the end of the 2009/10 season and was instrumental in our reaching the Champions League.

I reckon we'll make a profit on him in the end.

That's only if he leaves Spurs on a free transfer, which I very much doubt will be the case.

Knowing Daniel Levy, he'll probably find some sucker of a club willing to cough-up £8m to £10m for Bentley.

Nothing to do with the thread subject but if you post a response within the quote mark parameters of a previous thread, it will give you that message and won't print your response. Don't know if that's what happened, but just in case you did...

Bentley and Hutton have been the worst signings in terms of cost for many a year.
