I would have said the same for Van Der Vaart before the deadline fiasco but look what happened. I personally believe we will still be in the CL by January so I'd say there's a good chance it could happen.

A very good point indeed. We're already looking like a far more attractive option for top players to consider, and hopefully we'll be able continue strengthening by capitalising on the quality of the players we already have.

They'd want something in return though. A fair price (No more VDVs at £8M) and maybe first dibs on Bale or Modric or simmunk.

Say Real were prepared to offer Benzema plus cash to sign Bale would you consider the deal?

Assuming for arguement sake Benzema was the perfect striker for us and would like up with VDV well and be an all around amazing striker the best since Klinsmann (just for arguement sake)

Would you scarifce one of, if not our best talent at the club who just happens to play in a postion we are able to cover reasonably effectively in order to secure the missing piece to our puzzle and complete our team with an all singing all dancing striker who can play the lone role etc....???

It;s an interesting dilemma, by no means would any of us want to lose Bale I am sure.....but as we have seen top class strikers do not grow on trees and if losing bale was the only way to aquire such a striker we would have to think about it (considering Modric, Rose, Niko can all play left wing and BAE is a great left back)

he'd be better than Keane but he wont get Barca wages here so it would be a big come down for him, but then again it was for VDV and he's managed OK

I really don't fancy him,in my opinion he is no better than Pavlyuchenko, has a little bit more pace but thats all.
He is not the striker for us.

If I thought Benzema was going to be a massive hit, I would probably do the deal. Mind you, I think Modric is a waste of time on the left, I seriously doubt that Rose will make the cut and I think BAE's distribution is not up to scratch. I think we would need Townsend to make the step up or buy a replacement for Bale.

I would like to get my dirty paws on Adam Johnson, for instance. It's said that Mancini has serious misgivings about him but unfortunately those twats wouldn't sell us a virus.

 he's twice the player Pav is

if Benzema came he'd be our best striker hands down no contest

sure he's had a rough time of it at Madrid and now he's playing second fiddle to Higuain but make no mistake about it Benzema is pure fucking quality and if there was the slightest chance we could get him we should jump at it head first. He'd be like Torres minus the injury problems.

Completely agree.

We need to go for top, top players suffering a dip because top players at their peak are not value for money. The problem is most fans only have eyes for who's currently performing, which is fine if you support Man City or Chelsea, but in the real world where cost does matter it means they'll always feel under-whelmed by whoever we sign.

Benzema is exactly the sort of player we should be looking to sign, unfortunately though, in his specific case I can think of at least one huge admirer of his currently managing a super-club and so I think we'd almost certainly be gazumped if Real tried to sell him.

I wouldn't swap him for bale though. Not even close. Decent strikers are relatively a plenty, players like Bale are much rarer.

Me neither, getting Bale would put an unseen premium on all our other purchases. Players will want to come as long as they think they're coming to be part of a team which contains players like VdV, Bale and Modric. Sell or swap Bale, even for someone like Benzema and you'll have to pay that much more in wages with any future targets to make up for the fact we're a less ttractive proposition all of a sudden.

that said, the truth is that unless Bale is unmotivated by success, fame and fortune or he feels particularly loyal to us then we are going to have to part with him at some point. The real question is can we do it when he's at his peak but just before he drops from it, ala Wenger? And can we then reinvest the money in bringing through future Gareth Bales? That ability is what makes Wenger the best manager of the modern era imo.

Would love Benzema, he's strong, fast, powerful and skilful, and could partner any of the current forwards, play on his own or even cut in from wide. He's had a rough time at Madrid but the same can be said of VDV, Huntelaar, Drenthe, Sneijder, Robben, Saviola, Samuel and Kaka, all of whom that have left have been superb since, while Kaka is a recent World Player of the Year. Madrid is a career stalling club. Even real Ronaldo, great though he was forthem, was never quite as good as pre02. Of the genuinely huge signings they've made, the only ones who've been as good there as everywhere else are Figo, Zidane, R.Carlos and perhaps S.Ramos. Even C.ronaldo hasn't been quite thr CR7 of utd.

Having said all that, not worth sacrificing Bale to get him, not unless the give us £30m, Benzema and Drenthe (who is looking the nuts right now on loan).

Big Old Red Nose may have the horn for Benzama but he doesn't have a pot to urinate in so unless he's chucking Rooney into the deal he doesn't have a cat in hell's chance of gazumping us.

If they want to buy someone they can.

As of their last bank statement Man Utd had £163m in the bank, as of our last bank statement we had £6m in the bank.

So that gives them 2 years worth of 80m losses before they're in the shit?
