I think whilst we were genuinely challenging for the top four, it was the correct thing to prioritise it.

There is no doubt that being a CL regular has huge advantages. Unfortunately though we may have missed the boat. We had to sell our best players.

Next season top four is looking less likely, so I would like us to prioritise the Europa League.

He was at a club that won the CC, but he wasn't in the squad, nor did he get a winners medal. So technically he didn't.

I don't get it. He scored in the 3rd round vs Middlesbrough?

Pretty sure in the League Cup only members of the match-day squad get winners medals. Check his Wiki page, it's not listed in the honours section.

Interesting. Seems a bit harsh really.

Berba, Modric and Bale all sulked and pushed a move away from Spurs in order to achieve their ambitious dream of playing Champion Leagues and winning trophies and medals!
Only Berba won something at Spurs - Carling Cup.
They seem right to have moved in order to achieve this...perhaps we are not seeing it as they are!

Most brag about good football or the Spurs way but it's been years since we won anything!
We now need a new manager and while they have achieved their ambitions away from Spurs, we sit here discussing, comparing and complaining for a new manager.

Some wants Pochetino, others FDB while it has been rumored of Benitez and even Ancelotti. When DL visited LVG, I was excited that at least he showed ambitions by looking for experience and a winner!
I don't know about you people but it hurts seeing our London rivals winning something (Arsenal FA cup) and beating us (example includes West Ham).

Liverpool played outstanding football last season and even beat Man City, yet they have nothing to show for it except for a 2nd place but no medals or trophies - agreed they made champions league but still won nothing!

Winning thing is the cake, playing good football (the Spurs way) is the cherry on the cake!

I hope we appoint someone that can win us things...even if it's the carling cup and a top 4 finish.
We really have to be ambitious in this appointment.

If we appoint someone like Pochetino/FDB then we ALL must be patient and give him time and IMHO most fans (including me) are frustrated at the lack of winning and achievements!

We have a good squad and I would prefer someone who can win us things and if that is Benitez, then so be it!

What are our ambitions? Only top 4? Is that only our aim? That should be a minimal but not our aim!
If I was a player like Lloris or Eriksen, I would look at these players (Berba, Bale, Modric) and see that they achieved their dreams elsewhere and not at Spurs! And if our next appointment doesn't show ambitions then I too would think of moving on.

What are your thoughts and feelings? This next appointment is crucial...and I just hope it will be an ambitious appointment not a cheap option!

OP focuses on Modric, Berbatov and Bale. All players we scouted alongside much larger clubs, but in each case Spurs bought them.

Modric was rumoured to not be physically large enough (Wengeer rumoured to have said that), but Spurs went ahead, bought and played the player, and after about 18 months Modric gradualy was being recognised as a top player.

Berbatov was at a decent German side (bayer Leverkeusen) playing in UEFA Cup, but the big sides (ManU I think) looked but diod not buy, so Spurs boought him, played him and relatively quickly he was recognised as a top player.

Bale was well know, scouted by ManIU and Arsenal (who signed his team mate Walcott), Spurs signed him and played him, but due to Bale's young age at signing and subsequent injuries it too several years (and a change of position from LB to LW) before Bale became recognised as a top player.

Point I'm trying to make is that these 3 players were scouted by Spurs, bought and nurtured/developed before becoming top players, and they then decided they wanted to move on. They owed limited loyalty to Spurs and moved on. Nothing wrong with that - it happens to all clubs, even those more famous than us such as Ajax.

We need to recognise that will continue to happen - but we also need to continue to scout and buy the young undervalued players not picked up by bigger clubs - that gives us top players (even if we are forced to acceed t9o player power and sell them later for large profits).

However in parallel with that, we hope to see a conveyor belt of youngt talent coming out from our youth system who will come into the Spurs first team, and potentially stay longer with Spurs as they have a natural empathy with the club.

Whoever is the next manager we need to have one prepared to play and develop players - we cannot have a manager who is almost allergic to young players as they are our lifeblood. We have some great young players - both those bought and those from our youth system - just waiting to be developed. The outstanding piece is the Head Coach/Manager to bring the best out of them by using all the squad in the 60 odd games we will compete in with Pl, EL and domestic cups next season.

I don't think there is a perfect manager out there for us - the best might be Martinez but he's not going to come to Spurs from Everton - but I can see good points for both FDB and Poch both of whom have a reputation of playing young players

I blame Berba and Keane for leaving us high and dry. And then Levy/Harry for not sorting it out.
Wasn't it Ramos that was left to deal with that clusterfuck? He was left with Pav & F Campbell, aka 2 points & 8 games. Harry came in & sorted it by buying Keane Defoe & Crouch.

Losing Keane & Berba fucked us though, best partnership we've had in recent memory.

You're definitely right about scouting and developing players. I'm not against that! But what about winning trophies? Someone rightly said that excellent players in their 10-15 years of playing wants medals and trophies to show for it or show their achievements.
Are you saying that we keep scouting, nurturing and developing players and make profits on sales only - so we stick to being a feeder club - what about winning? Achieving? Our trophy cabinets?
Even Hudd and Livermore were close to winning a trophy and medal but sadly not at Spurs!
I am all for player developments and understand that bigger clubs will want our best players but I still think if we win at least something then the players will see our ambitions, the fans will be happy and the club will have more clout!
Martinez won the FA cup with Wigan. Yes they got relegated but these players have something to show for it, the fans were proud of their club's achievement. I'm not saying that we should accept relegation over winning Trophies by the way.
FDB has experience of winning but in a different league and in Europe. Pochetino is a great up and coming manager.
I just want someone who can develop players and win something...showing our ambitions.

Yeah, but I don't blame Ramos as its clear he had nothing to do with it. I believe he was promised a certain calibre of striker and got fucked over.

Harry had the golden opportunity to sort us out as we were a CL side and could have had Suarez. Levy takes the lions share of the blame though.

one way or another, its hard to deny that these kind of players achieve more playing for other teams than they do for us.
Not sure if its ambition, mentality or playing with better players around them. Frustrating....

I take your point about winning trophies, but I don'y know you can plan to do it.

IMO all you can do is to acquire and develop players, trying to keep them as long as you can (but if a player wants to loeave..within a year or two he will do).

But whilst the players are at Spurs we try to win whatever trophies and top 4 places that we can do - but in theory we've been doing that for 130+ years already !

So I restate, all the club can plan to do is constantly improve the squad - which should increase the chances of winning trophies - you cannot plan to win trophies themselves (although dropping out of contesting all but one competition helps ! But not my choice )
