Having a chat with my mates about football and got onto great players. Someone mentionned that England haven't had anyone great in the last decade. The likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes boast an amazing club record but due to early international retirement, being played out of position or playing in an unbalanced midfield mean none have an impressive England record.

My opinion that Beckham did more for England than any of the three above received a lot of criticism. Seaman was coming to the end of his prime and we've struggled to find a capable keeper since though Joe Hart looks like the obvious successor.

Owen started the decade really well and Rooney burst onto the scene in impressive fashion but like Owen without the excuse of injury failed to make a consistent impression.

Like is often the case it's the English defenders who deserves the most credit. They may not be popular but Ashley Cole and Rio are probably our best players over the last decade.

I'll vote for Ashley Cole and I'll leave the rest to you all to debate.

Beckham. Nobody elses desire, application, leadership and passion comes close.

One of the best ever.

Hate to say it, but Ashley Cole is the only England player who has been consistently good, even during the McClaren period and the most recent World Cup when everyone else was abysmal.

I want to vote for Becks but objectively Cole just pips it for me.

Ashley Cole has been good, but certainly not consistently good. Certainly not good enough, or made a big enough impact to be considered Englands best player of the last decade.

Owen for me. Only three players have scored more goals for England, and Owen has been incredibly unlucky with injuries too.

I would choose Cole but only if you consider 2010 as a part of the decade, if you don't and can't count the world cup than Becks is my choice.

Ashley Cole. A world class full back who would get in to most international teams. Even Beckham would struggle on that measure. And he was my original selection.

Ashley Cole has definitely been one of the most consistant players for England, probably ever in all fairness.

One of the best in his position in the whole world.

But Beckham for me, not only for what he done on the pitch but every other aspect that surrounds him also. Beckham has done more for England (both on and off the pitch), than any other player in my life time.

It's like there's an echo in here, but justifiably David Beckham is easily the best, most consistent and influential players in the national team this last decade. Yes Ashley Cole has always performed on the pitch despite being a massive gaping arsehole, but hasn't been anywhere near as important as Becks.

Greece, 2001, nuff said.

Beckham.

I'm surprised that Rooney hasnt got a vote yet. although id never vote for him myself and although that he has been shit for a year or more for England, id have still thought someone would have gone for him. maybe not on a spurs forum where most of us will probably think that he is a ****

Beckham, no contest. I have so much manlove for that guy. The 2001 Greece match was the most inspiring performance Ive ever seen from a player, and then that free kick was actually unbelievable.

Probably Owen second, the rest trail by some distance.

But er....wheres the Campbell option ;p
