He's much less of a legend in my eyes as a result of that.

And I hope in the eyes of others as well.

For me there's a fundamental difference, partisanship.

My first ever game was Spurs v Derby. We won 3-0 and Gazza scored a hat-trick including 2 beautiful free kicks. I also saw his infamous free kick against Arsenal in the semi final and to this day I remember how great that moment felt. I can't erase these memories.

But those feelings are connected with being a Spurs fan. I remember seeing him give a tearful interview on TFI Friday and I really felt for him. Since hearing about the domestic violence my respect for him has massively lessened and I rarely pay attention to him nowadays.

With boxers though they are not part of the team you support. You choose who you support. There is some partisanship with nationality but I couldn't bring myself to support Hay over Klitschko as I respect Vlad for the most part and really can't stand Hay.

Mayweather being a wife beater means I can never support him. I can appreciate his talent as it is so rare but as he's not part of my team he is not connected to any fond memories.

So one wife beater gets a pass and the other doesn't?

Not sure how you took that from my post, I don't really.

I said one played for my team before I knew he beat his wife. In that period I saw him do some amazing things on the pitch and those memories live with me to this day. But his actions since means I don't care about him and have no respect for him.

The other I have no connection with so I don't respect or like him but also have no early memories of him.

How on earth that is giving someone a pass is truly beyond me.

At the end of the day Mayweather will be remembered as:

1. A great technical boxer; and
2. A complete penis.

I don't think anyone can dispute either of those points, and the latter will always cloud his legacy...and quite rightly.

Im sorry but I now hate Pacquiao also. His promoters are suing people for streaming the fight meanwhile they made hundreds of millions of dollars by clearly misleading consumers. If anyone should be being sued its them.

Mayweather can go kill himself, though. Hey fuck face, start punching people in the ring. Not outside the ring. And especially not your girlfriend/spouse. Also, dont be fucking bailing murderers out of jail. Dickhead. Also, learn to fucking read for christ sake.

It's true but still an excuse. He should have not fought ,his money should be withheld, he lied about his injury.
Oh I agree, and there's talk about him being fined for not revealing the injury. So what if it had meant a delay? We'd all already waited 5 years. I don't think it would have affected the result anyway - he isn't good enough to beat Mayweather.

Tyson is a convicted rapist, wife beater, beats up seven prostitutes amongst many other things and his legacy isn't clouded it's stronger than ever.

Maradona also wasn't the best behaved, but still considered a legend by many

Sadly boxing is a sport where the
Majority of fighters come from poverty/troubled upbringings and even all the fame and money cannot rid them of their demons, not that its an excuse at all but it is a part of the sport, as for legacies sugar Ray Robinson is remembered as an all time great but by all accounts was a nasty piece of work who beats his wife also.

Thing is, would the Nevada board have called off the fight if he declared the injury?
Can you imagine the backlash if he HAD declared it and the fight was scrapped at the last minute?

As for the comparison to Tyson, he was convicted but it's well known that the circumstances surrounding the conviction were a little on the dodgy side. I'm not saying he didn't do it, but it must also be stated that it was a one-time event, whereas Mayweather is a repeat offender - at least 4 convictions for domestic violence and battery.

It's not as if it was a broken fingernail, a tear to the rotator cuff is an extremely painful injury and without doubt inhibited him. Now there will be a question mark in some people's minds about whether Mayweather would have beaten a fully fit Pac.

I agree about the circumstances but he was still convicted, whether guilty or innocent normally that would destroy someone's life. What about Tyson beating his wife, prostitutes and two motorists?

As others have said, being a complete penis and being a legendary, widely adored, boxing hero are not mutually exclusive.

What will cloud his legacy among sports fans in general, if not the dull boxing 'purist', is the fact that his style offers very little in the way of excitement, and his victories thus tend to be be as forgettable as he himself will be when he retires.
