Brad gets a lot of stick here in the States for the accent. Americans who "pick up" the English accent are considered poseurs of the highest order. Though, to be fair to Brad, it took him years of living in England to pick up the accent unlike Madonna who seemed to develop it after attending a Helen Mirren film festival.

Steve McClaren when he went to manage FC Twente jumps to mind for rapid accent switching, and does anyone remember that Donna Air lass? Thickest Geordie accent, marries some high-profile type and suddenly she's transporting plums around in her face hole.

To be fair, i'd let her transport my plums around in her face hole, so i can forgive her somewhat.

Americans who pick up a British Accent are the better for it.

But which British accent? I've been watching Burnistoun on youtube to work on my Scottish accent but maybe I should cockney so I can perfect my 'Arry. No wonder he's in the feckin reserves! Triffic, top top lad. I guess I should go Welsh because of my ancestry but when I look at Welsh words I am overcome by all the consonants that are smooshed together. It looks like something is wrong with someone's keyboard.

Any accent from these fair Isle will do, lets face it, the way you speak now is only an extension of what we left behind.

I don't know, I've got a pretty sweet Central California Coast accent I've been protecting from my New York surroundings for a decade now. I will definitely go Geordie or Yorkshire or Scouser before I go Long Island. I will make that promise a thousand times over!

Some people just pick up accents more quickly than others. If I spend a half hour in a room with some Germans, I start hearing my phrasing and vowels change in a Germanic direction. I've been living in London for 40+ years and most people I meet assume I'm 100% a Londoner, but others spot something transatlantic immediately - it has more to do with their ears and upbringing than my voice, but I am aware that my accent also changes a bit depending on the topic of conversation: I sound a bit Amurican when I discuss music and very Lahndon when I discuss beer or football.

But I knew an architect, originally from Oregon, who came to London several years before I did and, to the day he died, sounded exactly the same as he did when he arrived. I reckon it has to do with the way different brains acquire language and process sound, although I don't have the scientific knowledge to say why. Some people have a life-long fix on their childhood accent that never budges and some people pick up a bit of everything that they hear.

This makes a lot of sense, of course. I'm actually susceptible to picking up the accents around me so I have to be conscious about it. It's just important to me I don't forget where I'm from so I try to pay attention to how I speak. I'm kind of a weirdo that way. I should add that the stick we give Brad about his accent is more good natured than anything. We love the big fella over here.
