It actually reminds me a bit of John Cena. I think he'll sell a hell of a lot of merchandise to the kids and make lots of money. As well he should do as well.

I know its according to the Sun but here is the story http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs...owns-trademark-own-celebration-071409359.html

Gareth Bale has successfully trademarked with the Intellectual Property Office the logo featuring the heart-shaped hand gesture that he does after scoring goals, according to the Sun.
The 'Eleven of Hearts', as Bale's celebration is now technically known, is part of plans to turn the winger into a global brand.

Just to be clear, it's the logo and not the celebration?

I'm pretty sure that I've seen Pato do that celebration long before Bale started doing it.

Not the best branding. Gareth if you're reading this, drop me a line, branding is what I do for a living.

What a tool. Just play football and pick up your £5m a year, you don't need to look like any more of a money grabbing whore. You didn't even invent the heart thing you just put your club number in it......footballers suck!

So you're telling me, if you were in his position and could make another 3 million pounds a year for creating a logo and sticking it on some clothes, of which you wouldn't be designing, you wouldn't do it?

Its like free money for him.

I probably wouldn't no. I'm not obsessed with cash and i think what he earns is more than enough in 2 or 3 years to last a very comfortable life. Each to their own i guess. If i was in a position to raise money from my 'brand' then i guess i would consider setting up a charity foundation or something - that way there are genuine benefits for people, free money to a millionaire is just crass.

Oh come on, so if someone came to you and offered to nearly double your yearly wages and all you had to do was wear a hat with a logo on a few times you wouldn't do it?

Millions of pounds or double millions of pounds makes very little difference.

One positive I can see out of this ridiculous campaign is that it will make him enough cash to not be immediately lured by the mega-wages other clubs may offer him.

Well there is a difference in earning thousands per year and millions. Yes if someone offered me more i probably would take it to help pay the bills etc that are currently about as much as i earn. If i earned millions per year and my interest could pay my bills then no i wouldn't want more money. Anyway, stupid point to argue on. He is his own man and if thats what he and his agent wants to do then good luck to them, it doesn't affect me one bit as i cant imagine ever being interested in any product with his logo anyway as sports gear isn't really my thing.

I would do it, because it's part of the game of life. That's the level at which he plays. Not sure that I'd slag him off for doing it and suggest it's crass or that he sucks, precisely because, as you say, while there's a difference between earning thousands per year and millions per year, there's really little difference between earning several millions per year and 2 or 3 times that. If we realise that then mindless accumulation of wealth begins to seem pointless in terms of how it can benefit you, so my assumption might lean towards believing that he has altruistic motives, otherwise what is the point? Which brings it back down to the game of life. Unless he just wants to lie back and enjoy his millions for the rest of his life without actually working at anything, then he might as well play the game and do as well as he can. That's what driven people do. But I do (I think) get your point about crassness and "footballers suck", because the real acid test for me is what you do with the money, and if it were me (I hope I would do this anyway), and as per what you said, I would use the money charitably, and make it my life's work - the part of the "game" where you start to use that money for something good. Isn't there a field of study which addresses these sort of issues? Maslow's hierarchy of needs springs to mind. Not trying to be argumentative by the way - just waffling on a bit too much and probably ending up saying pretty much the same as you ;)

This is just the normal thing that top sports stars do, it's not a big deal. If you really need to blame someone then what about Michael Jordan with his Air Jordan logo? This has been going on for years in sport.
