I'm wondering if Skipp's tendency to almost always take the short, safe passing option is a hangover from Conte. I really hope it gets coached out of him.
I don't think so. that's a trait of a player who has no confidence on the ball. some of his progressions are absurd, his only intent is to give up the ball.

This season could be tough on the heart.

But, early days, and I expect the players to grow in confidence.

Of the debutants - I think they have played well. VdV unlucky on the goal, but I think he has shown well otherwise. Vicario has made a few good saves, and Udogie is looking calm on the left side.

Bissouma has been great. Royal and Sanchez have done their jobs for the most part.

Maddison is a threat anytime we are near.

I think we need a bit more confidence, and some better interaction on the wings.

I expect we still have 2 more goals in us when we get some fresh legs on.

It's not entirely the CBs fault though. They are making the same play over and over again. The back pass needs to be defended by the midfielders that are not returning quickly enough.

One of Bissouma and Skipp needs to be more defensive.
Yep these replays at HT pretty damning. People raving about Bissouma but he’s jogging back when Brentford are breaking on us!

Actually quite cross with myself for not taking Romero as first goal scorer - I’d been thinking all week about how we have a weird record of unlikely goal scorers on the opening day. Assou-Ekotto, Vertonghen, Dier, Ndombele, Sessegnon. Add Romero and Emerson to the list.

Agree. It’s been a really enjoyable half but it’s certainly disjointed.

Every through ball by them appears to create a chance.

Richarlison has been anonymous and Son and Kulusevski out wide have been ineffective.

We have a strong bench. Interesting to see how Ange uses it.

Would you make any changes or wait 15 mins?

I think if I was Ange and nothing has changed at around 60 mins then I would have Soloman and Lo Celso ready to come on.

That was exactly what we should have expected from a half where: we have a new manager, new system, multiple debuts, lose our main CB early. Plenty to work on but plenty of positives.
We’ve played without much contribution from our front three and Skipp really. So plenty of room to improve.
I agree and against a team that has been playing in the groove for a couple of years, not bad at all and so much more to come.

Early days of course and I’m sure things will improve but our defending on the wings is a massive concern. It’s taken Brentford one half of football to realise how much space there is on the wings.

Going to lead to a lot of risky tackles from Romero and VdV when the ball is kicked behind our fullbacks. Can see a few reds for them this season.

I do find it a little naive from Ange. Brentford have no othet outlets than quick transitions against a high line, why keep giving them the chance.

Wish we were a little bit more pragmatic against teams like Brentford. Rashford gonna destroy us next weekend if we leave him this much space.

We look rusty as fuck. Front 3 have been poor so far, midfield looking decent but defence dodgy too.

Need the front 3 to start performing which I’m sure they will as the season goes on. Son’s too wide for my liking. Even with Maddison playing really well we’re finding it really difficult to break them down. On another day the pen isn’t given and their second doesn’t get that luck. They should’ve scored near the end though.

Exciting and exhausting to watch.

Interesting they seem to be targeting Emerson.

Sad to say it's working so far.

Their number 3 has had him on toast.

Not liking that they can manufacture a chance pretty much every time they just punt it down the left.

Bissouma has looked fantastic for me. Best player on the pitch by some distance so far

Richarlison looks totally lost up there. Has no idea how to get himself into the game.

We are so obviously going to need to buy a goal threat before the window closes.
Brentford are packing a 7 man backline with our wingers settling wide and deep and midfielders hardly making a run at the box.

there is absolutely no way he can achieve anything on that basis.

We’re going to get caught on the counter often this season. I’d be inclined to play a flat 2 DM system when Bentancur is back to protect the CB’s and leave the fullbacks wide so they can cover in behind the CB’s more. It’s very exposed at the back
Completely forgot Rodrigo, midfield will be a lot better once he is back
