Probably the worst stylistic matchup we could’ve faced today. Brentford are aggressive pressing in the early build up/throw ins near GK/goal kicks, but really organized against settled possession. Only other teams in the division who’ll play that deep are Everton, Luton, Forest, Sheffield United, and maybe West Ham/Wolves. All of those teams either have less quality defensively, won’t be as aggressive in the first phase, or both. Also, final third chance creation takes time. All in on Ange, we all just need to be patient.
I agree, their style made it difficult for Son and Kulusevski and our side whose attacking system is still developing.

Never underestimate some of SC's posters in their ability to find negatives where there aren't any.

Why are some peopleso desperate to dog people out?

Vic was fine. He conceded from a soft penalty and a deflection on a shothe otherwise would have saved.

Royal was one of our best players.

Richy was fine but not given tonnes of service.
It's just a hangover from the before days. It'll take a few weeks, then we'll be right.

Just my two pennies on it. A couple of frustrating moments, but the roles felt very much reversed in terms of the football I was watching compared to last season.

How many times last year did we sit, invite pressure and try to counter? This was not that. Away from home, pressing the oppo, in and out of possession. Granted it wasn’t perfect but soooo much better to watch. Some really positive signs AND a lot of room for improvement. A very good start given the changes we’re trying to make and have had to adapt to.

Just hope we can bolster a few key positions still before the window is done.

Good early game to see which players won't gel breaking these low block teams down, I'm not sure any system suits a Son/Richarlison combo tbh and possibly a game that would have suited Solomon rather than Kulu, onwards, encouraging stuff.

Got to get another defender and goal scorer . Maddison is to good a player to just have a out of sorts Son and Richarlison to aim for . The left side of the defence is sorted . Just need a right sided defender and to find who plays with Bissouma and Maddison in midfield

Personally I thought that was a really good performance with bedding in new signings and obviously a major change to our options. Brentford compact and didn’t really give Richy any space, they will be as solid at home as they were last year, we were much better than last year. Son showed needs a bit more preparation , maybe use the subs a bit earlier. Definitely need more options up front and in defence but all in all a good start and next game will give us a different test. Maddison & Bissouma mega today and hope Romero available for Saturday

Really good game, happy to see us back in control of a game. Midfield were excellent, especially Maddison and Bissouma. Udogie and VDV great in defence too. Still don’t rate Kulusevski, think he’s too slow, Richarlison needs competition and Son is ineffective on the wing. Obviously can’t replace all 3 so I’d stick Son through the middle and try get at least one upgrade on the wing.

It was a 'tackle' was it? How is Son's intent to 'tackle' being observed in that clash of legs? How lol?
If it was against us, would you not be crying for a pen? Son didnt need to go in like that, it’s football. Was just a stupid tackle.

Son didn't do anything wrong. It was clearly incidental contact.

It was a good first decison by the Ref; a scandalous intervention by VAR and a cowardly reversal by the ref who knew it and punished us for his humiliation for the rest of that half.

As we didn’t make an official concussion sub does that mean Romero could be free to play against Utd? Someone mentioned there’s an enforced 7 day rest period and if that’s the case it might be wise not to play him anyway but if he gets an all clear are we technically allowed to play him?

The one thing that stuck out again today was Son and Kulusevski, they are really not suited to Ange's style of football, in every pre season game we played better when Perisic was on the left and Solomon on the right, he wants them to stay wide and the ST to stay on the last man as that’s where the space for the two 8s to get forward comes from, Gil getting injured early on was sod’s law, I think a fit Gil and fully integrated into the system could well flourish under Ange.

This may not go down too well but I think improving the wide forwards with the Kane money and sticking with Son and Richy up top before reevaluating next summer may be the better move.

Thomas Frank with the classic "Brentford should have won that game"

Alrighty mate.
He os wrong but from his perspective their game plan was to limit our chances and try to take us on the counter.

They could have done to be fair.

But we win a game like that once we address our weaknesses and have time

It was a tough test to start with but I thought we put up a pretty decent showing. Yes I was a bit nervous with some of the pressure Brentford put on us today as they made the most of us being disrupted by Romero having to come off.

A lot of new players in our side today, all acquitted themselves really well. Udogie and VDV hit the ground running, really good starts. Vicario wasn't half as bad as some have been saying. VDV really unlucky for that second goal.

Maddison and Bissouma were class today, with the latter feeling like a new player because of the way he was shackled by Conte. We need to do all we can to keep Maddison fit because he really does make us tick. We've been crying out for a player of his quality. If Bentancur returns from his ACL injury to a similar standard as to where he was before he picked up the disastrous injury, boy oh boy, what a midfield we will have, probably one of the best we've had in a long while.

A big shout out to big Dave, he was called upon due to Romero having to go off really and I thought he slotted in really well and put in a really decent performance. Royal worked his socks off.
Much to work on and the front 3 will get better when the gel and I'm encouraged that Maddison will give them decent service and I'm optimistic they will thrive.

Yeah makes sense.

Both Kulu and Son both take a touch back inside and allow the oppo to set.

They can do it though. Deki is more about close control and power whereas Son needs a bit of space to knock it into

A point at Brentford, that lost just two home games at home last season, and once in their last fifteen at home is a good result given the fact that three players made their debuts.

Special mention for Bissouma who looked to be the player we signed from Brighton, and for Udogie who looked to be settles in already.

Early days, more incomings over the next couple of weeks, and a much better balanced side than last season. With Bentancur to return we really will have a quality midfield.

Overall very pleased with the many positives we can take from the game today. Our disrupted pre season means we’re slightly behind in sharpness and fitness levels so with that in mind a draw isn’t bad.

I’m always nervous when a new goalie makes his debut as they’re under more pressure and any mistakes will be magnified. Hopefully now we’ve got that out of the way Vicario can relax into the rest of the season and play his natural game. Still have to remember he’s young for a keeper so as with VDV there will be mistakes made every now and then. We just need to support them and give them the confidence to keep developing and improving.

Richarlison needs a good run of games and the love of the fans and he’ll run through walls for us, same for all of the front three really as they’re clearly lacking match fitness and the edge you get from playing in a settled side.
