On the Setanta commentary for todays game against Man U, Lou Macari and whoever the other guy is were talking about how much hassle the ref's getting on every single decision. They made the comparison to Rugby where, when a decision is made, only the two captains approach the referee, he explains why, they say what they want to say and on the game goes. They then mentioned how Trevor Brooking (god bless 'im) is hoping to implement a new system in the English game similar to that of Rugby - if a decision is appealed by either side then the two captains approach the ref and the captains only.

I like this. I know that the sh*t refs get has pailed compared to the famous Woolwich/Man U encounter, where the Woolwich side went all Vampire on Horse-face, but it still drives me nuts. Fair enough, some decisions are valid complaints, but when they're contesting blatant handballs, or real wrecking ball challenges then what do they expect? The ref to change his mind?

Will it go through? Will it work? How will it be enforced?

I think it is a brilliant idea. I hate the excuse some people give against such a rule - 'the players are only showing passion'. That excuse is bollocks. Rugby players show as much passion and manage to control themselves from surrounding the ref.

Look at the rugby world cup final. When England had what looked like a perfectly good try, which would have won them the game, disallowed you didn't see the likes of Wilkinson, Tait, Cueto, etc., sprinting 20 yards to hurl abuse at the ref.

The only time a player that isn't the captain should speak to the ref during the game is when the official wants to speak to them.

As for enforcing it - ban players that don't go by the rules. With today's wages their is no point in giving out fines because two weeks wages for the likes of Rooney is nothing. The only way you can punish a player now is by banning them. If the FA banned players you would see an instant change because Ferguson and co., will make their players stick to the rules.

I agree with both posters, I don't know if I would want Keane to have the armband though, he's maybe a bit hot-headed and might talk himself into to bookings over nothing.

I do think that it would be an amazing change in football, but I don't think FIFA have the balls to implement it. I've pretty much lost all faith in FIFA though
