I firmly believe Gylfi Sigardsson can provide the fire power we need from midfield if Rafa leaves. He has proved at Swansea he knows where the onion bag is! He is clearly a potent threat that when utilised properly can produce the goods!;)

I bet Sig will score loads of goals. I would rather have Rafa playing that off the striker role though because he will tie the team together with his movement vision and passing, something we are losing with modric going. I think he will be better in this role this year because he will have Dembele making runs past him, something we never really had from midfield last year (and which was the main reason we played plenty of pretty football without being very penetrative.) Can Sig do that as well as VDV? And if not could Sig play the right side of the front 3? He'd certainly be more of a goal threat than lennon.

Might chip in with the goals, as for the other parts of the game I havent seen anything so far to suggest he gets close to what Rafa contributes.

He probably could, but with today's game being all about the squad I think both Rafa and Gylfi would have a part to play this season. We didn't have adequate cover for VDV last season and had to often revert to 4-4-2, but with Sigurdsson we can keep the same formation and maintain the goalscoring threat. If VDV goes and we just replace him with Sig, we're back to the same situation as last season.

I'm sure Gylfi will come up with some important goals this season but I feel Rafa might contribute more to the passion and mentality of the team when heads start to drop. The guy's a winner, one of the only proper ones we've had in recent years.

I've got a bad feeling Sigurdsson will be one of those players who banged them in before he came to us, will barely get one in a Spurs shirt, will get moved on and then start banging them in again. He has looked good so far for us, but let's face it, it wouldn't be the first player to suffer the Tottenham curse... :D

Last season (and the season before) Rafa puts in a full shift of running etc as well as providing one of the main sources of goals for Spurs. Siggy did well at Swansea at scoring goals but much prefer Rafa to be around another year which will allow Siggy both to play some games (nobody is going to play all 50 games if Spurs get to say Q/F in Europa League and have decent cup runs in domestic cups) plus also see how close up Rafa plays and learn.

If Rafa leaves amd we only have Ade, Defoe Kane, then my concern would be that Siggy does not get as many goals as Rafa did last season, Dembele does not have a great goalscoring record and so overall we score less goals than last season - big problem. If we get another goalscoorer in, we might be ok, but without that, we could be vulnerable.

Oh...and welcome Marvel0071, interesting fiirst post !

Gylfi's style is more direct and will score his share of goals. But he may lack VDV's guile in his passing. However being surrounded by better players may improve his game.

I really like the Gylfi buy and am glad he is on the team, but I think he is currently a pretty big downgrade from Rafa.

Always find it silly how many first choice XI's for Spurs I see around here with Sig starting instead of Rafa.
