When we completed 4th we had most of the players we have now, last year we had 3 of the most, exciting players in the league, Modric, Bale, VDV. With a vast array of players and now Sandro commIng through. Is the doom and gloom as bad as some have mentioned. Has Pav finally learnt enough English to be a 14 goal wonder, has Defoe finally got over his niggerly injuries. Will Bale and VDV be our main attacking thrust.

If did not sign anyone else would it be so bad.

Goons have a new wonder striker, but the other fella with the scarf was gonna set there season alight, Scousers are buying a new team, Chavs are panicking about the lack of creativity and Torres has yet to set the stage alight with goals.

Shitty now have a coach load of 120K plus players who they can't off load and there Captain wants out.

Only United seem not be panic buying.

It's going to be a very competitive season, but are we so bad now that we won't even have a sniff of the top 4

As the season approaches I become more optimistic,
We seem to be strong at the back and our midfield is awesome, so all we need is a bit more confidence up front.

We need a fucking striker who will score.. And the good times will role in again

If, and it's a big if, players like Defoe, Crouch and Keane could suddenly start banging them in then there would be no problem. We could do it again.

But last season showed us that our strikers aren't reliable (well, those that got to play regularly anyhow). The consistency isn't carried across multiple seasons so I don't think we can go forward on the premise that because we have some of the same players we did two seasons ago, then we don't need to improve. We most certainly do and we have a City rivals that are stronger than they were two years ago.

The team can improve without signings. VDV will have a pre-season with us so should improve a bit. Defoe had a poor season, but I can't believe he will score as few goals this season. Sandro has settled in now and is a big player for us.

But even if we improve a bit, I still think our current squad will be a bit short of 4th. Add the right striker and some pace on the bench and we could be in the title race (can't see us winning it).

So, we can improve, but we will fall short of 4th?

How, therefore, is that an improvement?

The squad we have is capable of doing big things (see Arsenal away, Lpool away, AC Milan, Inter etc) but what's obvious to me is that it is only a few very small tweaks from being at a much higher level imo.

I believe we will improve but it's all relative

If our rivals are still better then we'll still finish outside of the top 4

That is why we desperately need some strikers who can score

I thinks its a mental thing, consistancy is key. As above we have shown that on our day we can cope with the best, even with our current selection of strikers. We need to be able to take on the likes of Wolves etc in the league and the likes of the Young Boys first leg knowing that we will beat them. Obviously a top stiker or 2 could maybe instill more confidence going into these games but I still think as a unit we need to be far better prepared mentally.

Van der Vaart and Gallas both started last season really unfit. A proper pre-season with us and they should, hopefully, come back a lot sharper at the start of the season. Rafa has already showed in pre-season that he's ready.

Sandro, although injured right now, will be back and ready to play for most of the season. Modric got injured quite early last season and took a few more weeks before he found his top form again. Dawson and Kaboul both suffered injuries early last season which meant for a few weeks we had a constant reshuffle at centre back. Fingers crossed, we can avoid such injury troubles this year.

After a tough and tiring second half of the season, Bale looks back to his old self in pre-season so we should see him hit top form again too.

In my opinion, we're already stronger right now than we were at the same point last season. If the transfer window ended today, we'd be strong enough for 5th place. Any higher will require a striker or two because our strikers haven't exactly shown any improvement in pre-season over their piss-poor 10/11 campaign.

Defence and midfield have improved though. And we'll have to cross our fingers and toes that Gomes can recapture his 09/10 form too.

yes we can improve but we won't be good enough for a title challenge unless we sign a striker, but if we start the season with our current squad we could get back in the top 4 especially if pav can improve even more this season and harry can plays him more often

You have to admire some people's positivity.

Assuming that Modric doesn't leave; Sandro isn't too long returning; Gomes finds his form; Defoe and Crouch don't play as poorly as before, or that we upgrade one of them and Keane; that we don't get too many crucial injuries although we must expect one or two; that Gallas and Ledley keep reasonably fit; Van Der Vaart doesnt have a recurrance of whatever ailed him last season and Harry doesn't get sent to jail, we should be able to maintain our push for Top Four.

In the circumstances unless everybody else steps up including perhaps a couple of youngsters, (Townsend, Rose, Walker) I wouldn't put too much money on it.

I think that irrespective of how the rest of the team improves, if we continue to essentially play without a striker of anything like the quality required, then we will continue to sit behind teams with better forwards

We need to develop a consistent ability to break down teams who come to the Lane to defend - maybe new strikers will help but the creative players already at the club need to improve in this department.

We also need to play smart and not always play as expansive a game as we do. We can't get through every game saying 'you score two, we'll score three...'

If our designated strikers can't score then why not put VDV, Lennon, Bale or Niko up front? F*ck it, we know they can all score, often pretty impressive goals, and with Thudd serving up from midfield, who knows what they might manage?

That's about as unreasonable as suggesting trying someone like Kane could be thrown on against someone like Wigan for 20 minutes. Eek

What if we get a new striker and he scores less goals than any of the ones we currently have? As proven a few times before, the PL is a different kettle of fish compared to any other league.

I actually think that we can't have a season like the last one where our strikers are clueless in front of goal.

I would like to say aswell that as mentioned in another thread, Maybe we need to get rid of Les Ferdinand as I believe that he has a lot to answer for with regards to our strikers performance. It is very odd to have 4 decent strikers who all go off the boil at the same time.

I think we can improve with what we already have.

Totally agree with this and i think it is because we are so close to being at a much higher level that gets a lot of people frustrated at our lack of transfer activity.

Personally, i can't believe that all our stikers will have such a barron run in front of goal like they did last season.
