My brother and I have been arguing about this on and off since Nacer Chadli's signing was announced. I think that Chadli was bought to play as the left forward in a 4-3-3 (with Soldado central and Bale right), my brother thinks Chadli was bought as a back up to Lennon.

So what's the answer? Would Levy spend 7m on a back up, and would Chadli have agreed to join as a back up?

Is Aaron Lennon the most underrated player in the world?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

(I hope there isn't already a post on this, I did check)

I think Chadli will start in place of Lennon, but they will both be competing for a place, along with Townsend. That all sounds good to me.

Two words: Squad rotation.

Both will see lots of game time.

Personally I've always doubted Lennon in a 4-3-3 as he lacks some end product, but then again there's no guarantee Chadli will be a hit. Both will definitely get many chances.

avb doesn't usually throw new signings straight in so i imagine lennon will start but over time bale will move to the right and chadli will play left.

In the end it will be Chadli....

Chadli, no contest. Easily the more gifted technical player and has so much more to offer than Lennon. That is not to say that Lennon has not been a great servant to the club and still has a role to play. What happens if Chadli gets injured or rotated?

It's a bit silly to make a judgement until we've at least seen Chadli in a friendly to be honest. Even then, you need to see him in a couple of competitive matches to work out who'd be a better fit. As others have said though, will probably be a case of rotation, especially with us being in 4 competitions

How can we say that before Chadli played one minute in the Premier League. We will see what happens.

I reckon Lennon will start as AVB wants new players to prove themselves. I think they will be rotated due to number of games and depending on the opposition and who he thinks will expose opposition weaknesses best. Both are first team players who will get a lot of games. Good to finally have some depth in our squad.

Your brother is definitely wrong and clearly doesn't understand 4-3-3 as a formation.

His brother has said he thinks he has been bought as a back upto Lennon and it would appear hasn't mentioned 433, so aybe he believes we will have the same shape as last season.

The title suggest the context of the conversation was 4-3-3

I wonder how many people would have said Bentley over Lennon back when he joined and hadn't kicked a ball.

I don't think any of us has seen enough of Chadli to call this straight away. What it will do though (hopefully) is send a rocket up Lennon that he now has some proper competition.
