nah not really he was a right midfielder who they turned into an attacking wingback so as would as you'd imagine he's not great at defending

Bale should absolutely murder him

Zambrottas on the other side but at his age Lennon should stitch him up one on one

due to their usual 433 formation we should get alot of space on the flanks which will suit us to a tee. Also think Crouch will have a field day against their CBs

really the more I think about it the more I reckon we will do them. It's just very important we cut the supply out in midfield as their forward line can be devastating, one of the best in the world for sure

Sounds encouraging.

I've got a theory that Bale enjoys playing against pacier full backs because they usually are less intelligent and whilst they are quick they can't keep up with Bale's pace and power, but the more intelligent readers of the game Bale finds it harder to get in the right positions even though he could absolutely crucify them in a footrace. Ferreira for example played Bale excellently, but Maicon...well you know the rest.

this guys not even a defender really mate, he's only been playing fullback a season or 2 and very much likes to get forward and give them width on the right

truthfully I couldn't think of a more perfect player for Bale to destroy other than Maicon of course:grin:

What they might well do is stick Gattusso on the right hand side of their midfield though to give Bale a kick whenever he approaches Abate.

We're going to have to check under the Bolognese boys.

I would've thought they'll play Zambrotta at right back. Abate has the most pace out of their fullbacks, but he's not very good defensively. Zambrotta is the best fullback defensively so i'd guess they'll play him there. Although he does cover at left back aswell and is playing left back atm with Abate right back. I think they might switch for this game but i'm not sure. I expect them to pay special attention to Bale though. Zambrotta at right back and maybe one of the central midfielders to come over and help him out.

I'm sure they will do that but if so it could well be a short game for Gattuso as he's lost a step or 2 in recent seasons so Bale will blow him away and he'll be late as feck regularly

in midfield I can't see them hanging with us at all

Whichever way around it is, Zambrotta will have to deal with one of Lennon and Bale, and Abate will have to deal with the other. We should win both those battlers. The one protected by Gattusso will be the one who faces Bale I imagine, so Lennon will most likely have just the one fullback to deal with, because Pirlo and Ambrosini both stay pretty central and whoever they play on the left of their front three will be someone who doesn't help out his fullback (Roni, Robi or Prince).

Abbiati
Abate T.Silva Nesta Zambrotta
Gattuso Flamini Pirlo
Pato Ibrahimovic Robinho

I Just hope Redknapp doesn't try and 442 this one, we'll need Palacios and Hudd in the team and let Modric do what he does best without having to contain Gattuso/Pirlo/Flamini too. VDV Modric Bale with Crouch up top should be enough to trouble anyone.

At 1st I thought oh bollox but after thinking about it .... other than their attacking players, their defence/midfield is ancient!!! Bale/Lennon should have a field day against their geriatric full backs.

As long as King/Dawson/Gallas/Kaboul are fit come the ties, we should be ok at the back.

A quality striker/defensive midfielder/back up for Lennon/Bale - someone like Johnson, should allow us to beat them over the two legs.

That's the most difficult part of the team to decide.

We want Hudd and Wilson's strength and protection, we want Bale and Lennon's pace/attacking threat, we want Luka's control and vision, we want VDV's awesomeness but then we need a striker too, unfortunately one of them will have to miss out - with our injury record I don't find that too difficult though  Unless ofcourse you move Bale to left back but I don't want to start another "where should Bale play" debate.

I think our 4411 with VDV will be fine. Their midfield aint very attacking so we shouldn't worry about having to contain them really just close Pirlo down who is very much a lazy bastard on the defence. The Modric, Hudd, VDV triangle should rip their midfield apart and have them chasing shadows all game.

6 games and 7 goals in Europe for Crouch this season

he's been amazing in Europe with VDV behind him

don't think we need to change our style and get to tinkering with a proven arse kicking European system, lets leave all the tinkering and ffs what should we do to them and their coach

The style which has give us our best performances and results over the past 12 months has been two wingers, Modric dead centre with one other, regardless of whether its two forwards in front or one forward and VDV. Don't change what isn't broken dude!
