I still think this will happen, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the EU Referendum. There's a strong possibly sterling (the currency, not the 'footballer') will strengthen if we vote in on Thursday, and a near-certainty that it will drastically weaken if we leave. Marseille will obviously be concerned with how many Euros they're getting, but given the payment in transfer is seldom mostly up-front these days we have no idea until at least Friday of about how much we'd be committing to in pounds. Given that and the European Championships, I can't see this being especially quick.

You know what? I'm pretty sure somebody actually did mention the referendum in this thread not too long ago. I think their post wasn't too dissimilar to yours, but I'm not going through 50+ pages to find it.

Didn't Joe Lewis make his money through currency trading? I'm pretty sure that we've got this covered and that whichever way it goes we won't lose out financially.

Try not to be too pedantic. It's not kind.

don't they need the money by the 23rd, or is it the end of June?

Here are some explanations of what’s going on at Olympique de Marseille.
Current Owner Margarita Louis Dreyfus decided a few months ago to sell the Club.
Some interests are being shown to buy the Club from foreign investors but nothing serious yet.

To be able to play in the same League the next year, french clubs must have balanced the books by the end of the current year.

Deficits are not allowed in french football.
If you have deficits the DNCG (Direction Nationale de Contrôle de Gestion); the “ french economic football police” can decide to sanction the Clubs whose books aren’t balanced.
It can go from relegation of the concerned club from 1 to several divisions (levels).
Or to decide the club in bankrupt.

OM president Vincent Labrune has to explain how he‘ll manage to balance the annual accounts (2015-2016) to the DNCG
in Paris on the Thurday 23.06.16.
Currently the 2015-2016 OM’s accounts show a 40 M Euro deficit.( £32 M ).

On the 23rd June, Labrune will have the explain the members of the DNCG how he will manage to have balanced the books.
The books must be balanced by the 31th June.
Indeed, the books must be balanced by the last day of June.
The account year for french football clubs go from 1st July to 31st July.

Owner Margarita Louis Dreyfus advised President Labrune several months ago that she won’t put in a single Euro
comes the end of June to balance the books.
It could have allowed him more time to sell players for a better price.

To summary, OM President must guarantee this thursday 23rd June that he will have find 40 M Euro within one week.
And that he is not financially backed-up at all by the OM owner MLD.

Labrune needs to find 40 M Eur urgently.
That’s why he estimated Batshuay value at 40M Euros. West Ham already made an 40 M Eur offer for Batshuayi weeks ago.
Marseille were ok with the price but Batshuayi refused to go to Hammers because he tells that absolutely wants to play CL football next year.

West Ham has even less chances to sign Lacazette than Batshuayi.
Olympique Lyonnais will play CL football next week and Lacazette isn’t desperate to leave Lyon.

Lyon are in good financial shape and unless a 50 M Euro check to arrive in Jean Michel Aulas’s desk (OL Owner and President)
from a CL Club Lacazette is interested to play for; Lacazette might not leave Lyon this summer.
West Ham will not sign Batshuayi and will not sign Lacazette either.

To come back to Marseille, biggest player market value is Batshuayi.
Moreover, OM will have to pay 35 % of the money they got from the Batshuayi sell to Standard Liège.
Labrune won’t get 40 M Eur in his pocket from the sale of Batshuayi only.

To get 40 M Eur in his pocket (if we consider only Batshuayi is getting sold), that means
he must sell Batshuayi for 54 M Eur (£ 43 M).

No club will pay that amount for money for Batshuayi.

To get 40 M Euros, Marseille will have to sell Batshuayi + 1 or several other players to choose from Benjamin Mendy / Lassana Diarra / Georges Kevin N’Koudou / Nicolas N’Koulou.

There seems to be 3 clubs that are especially interested in Batshuayi.
West Ham - Spurs and Chelsea
.

According to many french medias, Chelsea could pay the requested 40 M Euro for Batshuayi, but considering Antonio Conte is still in international duty with Italy; I don’t think Conte has jumped yet totally in his new Chelsea costume.
Considering there isn’t only 1 week left for Marseille to find 40 M Eur.
I honestly believe Spurs are in the better position to sign Batshuayi.

Especially if he is honestly in his decision to play Champion’s League. (As Chelsea doesn’t play Champion’s League).

But I bet Jan , Toby and Mousa could play a role to convince him to come at Spurs.
According to medias, the biggest problem wouldn’t be the amount of cash Levy would agree to pay for Batshuayi
but the wages the player is asking for.
Batshuayi wants 130 000 Eur / week (104 000 £ / week ) to come to play for Spurs.

http://www.les-transferts.com/ligue-1/om-batshuayi-reclame-gros-salaire-a-tottenham.html

It seems that Spurs are reluctant to give him that amount of money.
Especially because he hasn’t proved anything to the highest level and has no EPL experience yet.

And it could create problems in the teams with other players as biggest earners in the team seem to be Lloris and Dembele with "only" 100 000 Euros / week. ( 80 000 £ / week).

Time is working for Spurs.
I think Marseille will come back to reality as Labrune knows time is running against him and buyer clubs know that time is running for them.

All what we need is to convince Batshuayi that what he asks for isn’t serious. But I think this can be done.
He is “only”earning between 140 000 Eur and 150 000 Eur / Month at Marseille. (between 35000 Eur and 37500 Eur /week).

He is asking Spurs almost 4 times what he is currently earning in Marseille.

I would understand if Levy would tell him to come back to reality or to f.ck off. And I Think he will come back to reality.

If Batshuayi wants to get CL footie (as he has told many times), he would come to us.

If he wants big money , he will change his mind and go to West Ham or Chelsea .
(as both clubs are more likely to pay the transfer fee and the wages he is asking for).

As far as I am concerned, I still think the deal to be done by the end of June / early July.
It would be the best choice for him from a sporting point of view.

I don't really follow French football, but if we don't offer them the 40 for Batshuayi, do they have any other talent they can also sell to help clear the debt?

Thanks for that. Personally I don't think Michy actually wants £100K a week.

How's Aissa? I signed him on FIFA and he was pretty good- he's a CB now isn't he?

They are selling Mendy to Monaco and can sell N'Koudou as well.

30 M Eur is the right value for Batshuayi.
Marseille know that and Levy knows that.

If other clubs agree to pay that amount of money (40 M Eur) as West Ham or Chelsea, let it be.

The only thing is that Marseille urgently needed money.
They must have 40 M Euro on their bank account by the 31 th June.

I mentionned in my post the players that have some value on the transfer market.

Regarding the players (forwards) that are interesting for Spurs in the french league, I would only say Batshuayi and Lacazette.

But he won't leave Lyon for less than 50M Euros.
