Tottenham are lining up a move for Cardiff's 18-year-old Welsh international defender Chris Gunter in the transfer
window (The Independent).

Anyone seen this youngster in action...??
What 's he like..??

I'm so tired of these kids...........bring in some actual players that can contribute to the team.

I know:bang:

I’d much rather we went for someone like Villa’s Melberg. He’s got bags of experience and he’s got proper Viking spirit, looks like he heading off to Juventus though

i've seen him play for wales a few times and he seems to be a quite solid defender who's not afraid to put his foot in.

dave jones seems to have high hopes for him at cardiff.

i agree we need a two tier policy when buying players, because having all the promising talent in the world means nothing without leadership and experience

He's 18. Like another Welsh player who contributes to the team :hello:. If they're good enough, what does it matter what age they are.

And if they're for the future, then be patient.

It's a gamble we can't afford though, look at Kaboul..!!

We need that experience now so that we can stop the rot..

We HAVE a two-tier policy. The board just doesn't like paying big money for players over 26 as they'll have little re-sale value after the average 4 year contract

We don't have to stop buying kids to buy experience. It's not one or the other and it's not as though this lad will break the bank. If he looks good, get him in.

Spurs opt for youth in pursuit of Gunter

In a clear sign that they intend to continue with their controversial policy of only buying up promising young talent, Tottenham Hotspur hope to sign Cardiff City's 18-year-old defender Chris Gunter in the January transfer window.

Gunter, who is already a full Welsh international, is an exciting prospect and the Championship club have already rejected two bids from Everton, made last summer. Spurs are likely to face competition from Fulham for Gunter's signature although Cardiff will try to drive a hard bargain.

Cardiff will not prevent Gunter, who plays mainly as a right-back, from leaving. Spurs will propose structuring a deal similar to the one that took another promising Welsh defender, Gareth Bale, also 18, from Southampton with cash up front and the rest dependent upon his progress and appearances. No price has yet been discussed although Gunter will cost at least £3m, with Cardiff hoping to realise far more.

The January transfer window is set to be a critical time for Spurs, their new head coach, Juande Ramos, and their sporting director, Damien Comolli, in particular. A number of Comolli's signings have failed to impress with Younes Kaboul, the French under-21 international defender who cost £8.2m from Auxerre, hauled off at half-time during the weekend defeat at home to Birmingham City.

Before that match Ramos had stated that only "desperate clubs" buy in the January window but, with Spurs only a point above the relegation places, it seems they now fall into that category. With Ledley King only just returning from long-term injury the need is for a dominant central defender to play alongside Michael Dawson.

Spurs scouts have been attending Espanyol's recent matches, which has led to the belief that they are tracking the 24-year-old central defender Daniel Jarque. It is also possible, however, that Spurs are considering a move for another Espanyol player, the former Manchester City left-winger Albert Riera who has been in impressive form since his return to Spain. Spurs will also be aware that the experienced Portuguese defender Fernando Meira is keen to leave Hamburg and would like to move to the Premier League.

The absence of an experienced defender, and the obsession with only buying young players, was a source of bitter regret for Ramos' predecessor Martin Jol – especially as his attempts to sign Sylvain Distin, who subsequently moved to Portsmouth, were vetoed on the grounds that the Frenchman is 29 years old.

In a foreword to a new book about his time at Spurs, Jol questioned the policy that has been enthusiastically followed by Comolli. "Youngsters cannot do it on their own, they need help," Jol wrote.

Can't understand the problem with this, he is a good young player so are we supposed to let him go to Everton , who obviously rate him, and try to buy him off them in 6 years time for a Kings ransom?

Buying a good young player has nothing to do with whether or not we buy older players with experience they are two totally seperate issues, buying good young players now means we shouldn't have to be arguing about the likes of melberg in 6 years time.

I agree, if he's a good youngster, get him in.

I feel we already missed a trick in Lescott, before he signed for Everton.

I mentioned i wanted to buy him in the what do we want for january thread.Very good young player been the subject of bids from everton which have been rejected. Would be ideal third choice RB behind Chimbonda and Stalts to gain experience. He's not a player we desperately need but we should get in early as possible because his value will rise the more gams he plays for Cardiff nd Wales

Only thing I know about him is that on FM2008 he seems to be pretty good, apparently that's how Roy Evans scouted some players for Liverpool, explains Rigobert Song who was amazing on the old Champ Man games.

No need for a director of football then, just buy Levy FM 2008 for Christmas job done.
I am not against buying young players , but a balance is badly needed. We missed out on Distin, and Petrov and we are going to miss out on Melberg. Any one of which would have improved the first team. And that is the point. the first team. Some hard nosed experienced players badly needed.
