There's two sides of the argument for Benteke:

Crowd 1: He benefits from being in a place like Villa where the aspirations aren't as high and it's easier to shine on a squad full of shitbags.

Crowd 2: He would benefit from a general upgrade in talent around him which will result in more chances on goal and higher quality of chances on goal. Everything won't have to live (win) and die (loss) by the chances he basically creates on his own.

I'm a hipster, so I'm making a 3rd Crowd for myself:

He's a fucking striker, is young and starts for Belgium, and he's already used to playing in the position we need him for.

It was only a couple of years ago people on this forum were telling me we should happily spend £25m on Andy Carroll because he's such a beast that he will soon be worth £50m (his current value is closer to £8m)

I'd take a punt on Carroll for £8 million today. Just saying...

We could have had Ba for FREE, which was apparently looked into by Mr Levy, only to discover that it was impossible to get insurance for the player. Unlike Chav$ki, we, as a club, can't take such an expensive gamble with a player, especially when you think about our track record/luck with players who have a history of injuries. He may well have done well for Newcastle, and he seems to have settled well at Chav$ki BUT you know full well, if we'd gambled & signed him, he'd have turned up for his 1st training session & ended up leaving in an ambulance, and miss the next 18 months of competitive football.
Err the bolded bit doesn't make sense. If it was impossible to get insurance for him how did Newcastle sign him?

I tend to agree with AngerManagement on this one.

It isn't simply a question of whether he is good enough. Players flourish better in different circumstances and need the right atmosphere to achieve.

If Villa stay up and for some reason decide to sell then they'll be asking for at least £15m. His stock is high being a 22 year old, a Belgian International and had a very good season in the Prem despite playing for a terrible team.

If we sign him there'll be a lot of scrutiny both by our fans and the media. He'll be judged as an expensive player and the pressure will be huge.

We are so desperate for a striker that any sign that he isn't good enough for us will be pounced on. That's a lot of pressure for a 22 year old.

If we'd signed him this season he could have started as a sub behind Defoe. Once he'd shown he was better than Defoe he'd have been seen to have earnt his way into our starting lineup. Being a £7.5m signing and in his first season in the Prem the fans would be behind him as expectations would be lower.

Much nicer atmosphere to come into.

He'll need to have the ability and a lot of character to join us for big money now and succeed.

Perhaps they decided to buy without insurance. Took all the risk themselves ?
Perhaps but I seriously doubt it. Ashley's proved himself to be no mug whan it comes to finances, Ba was on a very small basic at Newcastle by Prem standards

Benteke would be a great signing for us, he has a lot more to his game than just goals.

lmao no. do people actually take spursking's scouting seriously? he never mentioned benteke at all until he flourished at villa, which everyone at that time had already knew how good he is. his list just seems to be a 'football manager unknown good footballer' list with the dark skin filter on.

and yes i would give ade, defoe and your left nut too for benteke. i just hope they can go down so we can get him at the cut down price.

Just curious, why do you trust Lambert's judgment so much?

I agree though that Benteke would be a great buy for us.
I've always thought he buys well, he hasn't been able to buy big stars and yet has consistently got players that improved his teams.
When Norwich came up and survived he was looking for premiership quality players which he eventually bought for villa.

yep, cheaper if villa go down, but he'll be available either way as long as Spurs qualify for CL. DEFINITELY worth a punt

I cringe at the thought of defoe taking a shot like benteke's today, I though SK was onto something but meh.

OK, perhaps 'cost effective' would have been a better term? My point stands though..

"There is also the problem of insuring his knee. That was the reason why Stoke City pulled the plug on signing him in 2011 when he first moved from Hoffenheim."..... http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...red-off-by-his-30m-price-package-8393692.html

Newcastle, and then Chel$ki, have obviously decided to take gambles that we were simply unwilling to take.

Been banging his drum for ages. Powerful, strong, holds it up with ease, can finish explosively, fantastic in the air, links up the play very well.

Two more goals tonight, he's a beast. Young and huge potential to get even better, should be right up Levy's street.

My number one striking target this summer. Forget Remy, this is the guy we should be going all out for.

Benteke and a wide forward like Son, would be amazing.

I'll admit it, I'm becoming a Benteke convert.

At the beginning of the season I thought he was over-rated, thought his touch was poor and he wasn't an intelligent striker. I had also heard Villa fans saying he doesn't look for the ball and can sometimes be lazy.

After watching him the last few games I can admit that I was wrong. He's strong, good in the air and knows where the target is. He's no frills, doesn't fuck about with anything fancy, even his finishing isn't elaborate but he knows how to get it in the back of the net. At his age he's already built like a brick shithouse and has huge potential.

Him and Lukaku are the best young strikers in the league, and since we have no chance of Chelsea selling us Lukaku, we should go for him.
