What is a set midfield position?
One where you have your job going backwards as well as forwards. and are not reliant on others covering.

We've seen when he's been pushed out wide and asked to cover a fullback when we are defending, his efforts were half arsed at best.
I know that's not his game but you are not always going to have the luxury :sneaky: of playing in a free role with other midfielders expected to pick up your slack.

Like you mean in Poch's 4-2-3-1 system where he had to press high up the pitch and track back and cover and fill holes, his system literally relied on the forwards to defend from the front or it becomes useless. You don't get into a Poch side and last 5 years if you're a luxury player.

He was playing as a central AM his only viable position. He closed down space well without any real interest in getting close enough to tackle.
His tracking back when it wide was perfunctory at best and very often downright lazy. As for the half arsed attempts to retrieve s ball when he had closed someone down...

He wasn't, the front 3 would interchange so he was popping up in all 3 positions across the front three and depending on what side we'd lose the ball he's had to track back and cover. I take the point that he would rarely tackle but he would often shadow and cut the passing lanes.

This best explains Eriksen role first 1:30:

Playing first team football from the age of 17, coupled with five seasons of Pochettino where he was an ever present would suggest that there's quite a lot of mileage in those legs. I was among his biggest fans when he was with us, but it really had run its course.

And it never was about money with him. If it was, he could have signed a hell of a bumper deal four seasons ago before sulking his way out of here the following summer.

Agreed. He had his career mapped out pretty early and saved us a lot of money by staying on a contract that way underpaid his value to us. But he wanted to keep his options open and not have a big transfer fee block the move in his late 20s he'd been planning for a long time. I don't see anything dishonest or selfish in that. Just a guy who had his head screwed on even in his early 20s and knew what he wanted to do in the game.

I don't think you can accomodate a player like Eriksen without 2 exceptional players in the pivot behind him. We lost that when Dembele got sold and Wanyama fell to bits and haven't had it since. The number 10 position is becoming a bit old hat now with the most successful teams using a CM3 unless they're against very weak opponents. Wouldn't want him back anyway tbh.

If he hadn’t taken his eye off the ball he probably would have got his dream move to a top club

His form dropped and he moved sideways, not up. Needs to get his head in the game again and find himself

We're so close to having a selection of midfielders from which we can pick 3 to cover any eventuality: Højbjerg, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Skipp +1 (Sabitzer?) have it all between them.
