Shit! What a day it's turning out to be! Not too bothered about Man City being bought out:

1) It'll raise the profile of the Prem even more

2) You can still only have 11 players on the pitch. Chelsea have a bottomless pit of money and they haven't beaten us in 3 . Seriously though, we've still got a shit-hot squad and manager. AND we're a well run club with plenty of cash.

3) Man Utd and Chelsea will now have a run for their money

4) And as for Arsenal....

I know it's another rival, but who gives a shit; bring the ****s on. When we knock them down as well, it'll be even more sweet when we win the Premier League.

PS I'm not drunk, just an optimist

Looking like City have had a bit accepted, and now agreed a deal for Robinho!!

This has been a crazy day for football.

Unbelievable news. Man City are going to be a big power in the premiership now. Cannot believe Robinho has gone there........

Man City are the new Chelsea then. Well there's any sort of respect I might have had for Man City completely gone.

It's Liverpool and Arsenal who I'm now watching with interest.

Between the solidity of Villa, City's excellent purchases and buckets of cash, and yes even our great signings and good manager, there is an excellent chance that neither Pool nor the Goons will even be in the top 5/6 come January. And how much will either have to spend then? Not more than 20m surely?

We'll have maybe as much as 40m and City will have 100m+ by the sounds of it.

I just think if that's the case, then Arsenal and Liverpool can't afford to be even slightly off the pace as the pressure on them (Benitez especially, who I persoanlly think will be jobless by then anyway) will be too much.

Possibly wildly optimistic but will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Not to mention how either side could deal with not being in the CL 2009/10.

Great post Bill.

I don't think you're wildly optimistic, you're spot on the money.

It can't be clearer really; ONLY 4 TEAMS MAKE THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE! Realistically there's going to be 5 teams fighting for 4 places:

Man Utd
Chelsea
Man City
Arsenal
Liverpool

It doesn't take a genius to work out that one club is doing to be rather miserable come May.

I think it all hinges on what the respective clubs' form is like up until Jan 1st. If Man City are adrift by 20 or so points, then they could spend £100 billion and still not catch the 4th placed team.

Also, as you said, 2009/2010 will be a completely different matter - Man City will have spent an obscene amount of cash and be raring to go.

And there's also Spurs, Villa and Portsmouth in the mix.

Interesting times!

As I posted earlier somewhere, the Abu Dhabi crowd haven;t actually completed the takeover yet - it's all on the understanding that the due diligence checks out.

Given that they don't yet own the club, and presumably won't be writing cheques on the Club's behalf until they do, how have City found the cash to buy Robinho? Taken a short-term bank loan to be repaid if and when the new owners complete??

Risky business for me ... the parable of the house of cards

We're screwed. You can't compete with huge amounts of money, you just can't.
So, what's the option then?

All the clubs that are worth below a certain amount form a breakaway "Premier League 2nd Division" and let the top clubs slug it out in the mega-league whilst all the still-rich-but-not-mental-rich clubs fight it out for the second string? Load of crap.

There is only one answer to the way money is dictating the game now and that's for a proper governing body to regulate the movement of players - contracts right now mean shit-all and, as we've seen, can be forced in any direction the man with the most notes wants, the richest clubs bullying the smaller clubs (yep, even us over that kid from Palace i would consider bullying to some extent) but whereas it used to be common place between the top tier and the lower divisions, now it's happening between clubs that are in direct competition with each other which makes the playing field really, really uneven.

The FA need to be more vigilant over those who own clubs and those who want to own them - look at Frank - it was all down to the big fat wallet he bought with him regardless of the corruption scandal, being removed as the prime-minister of Thailand, etc.

I'm starting to hate football and the only people i blame are the FA.

how long until Mark Hughes gets fired?

Not long. Even if he does well. They'll want the best in the business.

Not sure why, but i have a funny feeling something will go wrong with the Robinho deal. I know it's all done and dusted, but i can only see it failing miserably if he does pull on a City shirt. Hughes hadn't even spoken to him when he signed. He blatantly wanted to go to Chelsea. No medical. A few things in the way there, but if he does get off to a good start at City, he'll end up at Chelsea next season anyway.

I'm sort of happy for the City fans because despite the moral implications of a billionaire taking over and buying success, i think i'd still love it if happened to us out of the blue like it did them. I'd prefer to win things the Levy way, but i'd love it if we were given a blank cheque for anyone we wanted. Everyone hates us anyway, so no loss there.

The new City owners have released a statement.

They intend to bid a world record amount of £135m for Cristiano Ronaldo in the January transfer window.

Other targets include Torres, Fabregas, Villa, .............

LOL. They are so loaded.
