In that 10 months he was injured for about 3 months. Yes, he has not scored in the league, but he's scored in the champs Leasgue and Carling Cup albeit against weaker teams. He will come good, and Im hoping it'll be very very soon. Harry just needs to keep playing him, as he provides that trait at the top which none of the other strikers have....speed
Bit of a myth, how often do you see Defoe outpace a top defender.

"Form is temporary, class is permanent." Such an overused and often incorrect cliche.

Owen and Torres are two players who never showed their class again after an injury while other players who continue to improve throughout their career make bigger impacts later in life. Owen has more class than Defoe but I'd rather have Defoe.

The problem is that the players being mentionned were never class.

Last season we had amazing hunger, work ethic and determination to push ourselves into the top four. Everyone played a role but few of our players were genuinely class. Especially our strikers.

Face facts. Defoe, Crouch and Pav aren't class players. They're decent but we have potentially a great defence, an already very talented midfield and a strikerforce designed for a team aiming for top 8.

This isn't temporary. We need real class upfront, we don't possess it.

He is definitely showing more signs of improvement and getting more involved but is just not looking like a goal threat which is a huge worry. If we can get 4th it will be time to change our entire quartet of strikers for Benzema Lukaku Wickham and Ashley Young. We don't need NO ONE ELSE

Defoe is good, just not good enough for where we want to be. He's been a great servant and gives his all, but his goal scoring is hot and cold and he offers very little else! As we want to be top 4, CL team and maybe challenge for the title JD will only be good enough to be a squad player and score shed loads against lesser teams.... Rooney, Van Persie, Tevez and Drogba he is not.... and that is the quality of forward we need to have

And whilst I don't rate him in the EPL, have those of you who doubt Crouch in Europe ever been to a game of football... Seriously, this ain't anti JD neither a popularity contest - just what is best for the future of THFC

For Defoe the opposite applies he's never been a classy player he's just a form player.

I'll put him in the "destroyer of shit team" class type

One thing about Defoe, he loves football, he's the sort of guy who will still do career modes on FIFA, and play Football Manager, a goal at the San Siro would mean the world to him, and probably have his confidence soaring into the run in.

Kranjar and Pav showed their class down the stretch last season, I hope we rely on them again the same way this year. VDV and Pav up front all day for me , with Crouch as an impact sub. I wish we had given Keane a few more opportunities earlier in the year along with Pav I feel that one of them for sure would have hit good form with some regular games. Crouch and Defoe didn't live up to their Portsmouth promise and outside of Crouch's few assists for VDV, they haven't shown any form or potential this year to score goals. Pav and Keane are also handy at taking penalties

What are chances of Defoe playing well away from home, against one of the best sides in the world? I hope but I really cant imagine. Maybe he can get us a penalty with his running, but please dont take it.

Defoe is our best striker..Still! imo.

Yes he has been poor, but he needs a rebound a deflection anything, then he will go on a scoring run.

Look at Torres, world class no question, but lack of confidence makes him look like Rasiak in the last two games, so i agree with the OP...give JD support, he will score loads again very very soon.

Defoe up till he was injured was probably amongst the top 4 dangerous strikers in the premier league.

You cannot judge Defoe on this season, and to do so would be foolhardy as is recovering from the lay off and is in the process of recovering his form. The power he generates with little backlift is unique in my opinion.

I think our little man is the key tonight, but I think Harry will opt for crouch, whch sets our stall out early doors ..

I haven't judged Defoe on this season. My analysis of Defoe is he's a very good striker but below international level.

He's a decent goalscorer but doesn't offer enough else.

We're in a great situation and are finally competing with the top four team in the Prem.

Jenas was good enough for us when we were mid-table but isn't now. Defoe and Crouch are also not good enough for us to compete with where we are aiming to be.

I don't mind keeping Defoe as an option but certainly wouldn't call him class.

the conundrum for me is if we make the CL again then Defoe and Crouch will not be sold, why change strikers who helped you get there.......... now if we don't make it then there will be an inquest into our season and they might be moved on. a defoe scoring goals will get a bidder, Defoe with out goals belongs in the championship. So do we make the Cl again and retain this ineffective strike force or not make it and get rid hopefully.

So it's either Champions League or Championship for JD?

I don't think selling Defoe is the way to go. Of our current lot, keep Crouch and Defoe, and bring in a trully stunning striker. We've been saying it since last May, it's getting tiresome now.
