Common theme with good performances

I know alot of you have been saying VDV should be dropped as he has been a passenger since february, but last night was our best performance offensively in a long time, we could have scored 6.

The point i am trying to make is that when VDV plays well, Spurs play well, is it a coincidence..... probably no. He just runs the strings in our team when on form, so hopefully we can keep him fit and firing till the end of the season.

COYS and viva rafa!

He certainly looked back to his best... I particuarly enjoyed the cheeky back heel in the second half.

Hopefully he'll remain in this form for the remaining games.

A question:

Do we play well when VDV plays well, or does VDV play well when we play well?...

I think the same can be asked of players like Lampard as well.

I have a feeling that Van der Vaart will be grateful for a proper summer's rest (having been with Holland in South Africa for the entire tourney last time) and he'll be firing on all cylinders next season tucked in behind a fabulous new striker.

Hmm.. I wouldn't say we only play well when VDV plays well.

He's a top player though, so if he does have a good game it doesn't surprise me that we generally look a better team.

It's a common theme, that after a player has a bad game they're shit and should be dropped, and after they've had a good game they're the 2nd coming of Hod.But yes, VDV is very good.

But that wasn't the point he was making was it? He was saying that when he plays well, we play well. Which means that when we play badly he is under performing too.

Quite apart from the goals, his work-rate was tremendous and his energy level seemed to be really up again.

It's a good question.

He was also playing behind two strikers for most of the game. I think that when it's just him and another striker, he's too tightly marked, hence the constant impulse to drop deeper and get more involved.

I agree, that he needs a proper summer's conditioning and pre-season. I am excited about what he will do next year.

VDV playing on the right caused arsenal som serious problems as he was constantly roaming around the pitch, leaving his position and disrupting their defensive setup. When he plays centrally behind a striker his movement sometimes becomes more predictable and teams have an easier time defending against us.

This is true but it also weakens us defensively too, this means we have to win every game 4 - 3 which is fine if we can do it.

As I said last week, he hasn't been at his best, but for the tough games coming up (last night, Liverpool, chelsea, Citeh) he is an absolute must as (with the possible exception of Willie G),he is the only player we have who really has the Big Match experience and mentality.

I think last night had an awful lot to do with the fact RVP was in the opposition. against Twente he was superb, against Bremen (rivals of Hamburg) he was good, Inter at home he was class (sneider and co) It seems to me he needs to be motivated by his personal competitive side.

His early form was more proof to Real Madrid than to his new fans.

The guy is pure class though. Long live VDV

I agree with this, two strikers up front meant their centre backs were occupied and allowed VdV more space and also to make runs in behind with no-one tracking him which lead to one goal and nearly another.

He's too inconsistent to build the team around.

He's no better than Modric or Bale
