The recent midweek round of fixtures in the Premier League brought a rather unwanted milestone for Irish football.

For the first time in the competition's history, not a single Irish player was to be found in any of the 20 starting lineups (h/t to @Irish_Abroad on Twitter)

Even with regular starters like Evan Ferguson and Seamus Coleman out through injury, it's certainly an eyebrow raiser for fans of Irish football...

Why is that do you think? Not so popular In Ireland as a sport or is it about pathways?

Don't forget though, that's probably people born in Ireland. As opposed to players born here with Irish parents etc.

Hard to say. A lot of good young players coming through, but in the lower leagues. Even the ones in the top flight like Parrott are going out on loan. With Fergusson and Coleman injured and Bazunu presumably dropped there are players in and around the premier league first teams. A few will be promoted next season too. Just an odd weekend all in all.

Ireland unlucky there - scored but called offside (it wasn’t) but the keeper played to the whistle and didn’t really attempt to save
