BBC Live Text
All four of Spurs' new signings are involved, with £26m record signing Roberto Soldado starting up front, plus Paulinho and Nacer Chadli in midfield. Etienne Capoue is on the bench, with Real Madrid target and double player of the year, Gareth Bale, out injured."
13:43 CLOSE! - Crystal Palace 0-0 Tottenham - Wow! Roberto Soldado does some due diligence out on the right wing, putting a shift in to win the ball and find Aaron Lennon. He tees up Mousa Dembele 25 yards from goal, who fizzes in a swerving strike which has Julian Speroni worried, skimming the top of the net on its way over. Superb hit from the former Fulham midfielder.
14:05 GREAT SAVE! - Crystal Palace 0-0 Tottenham - Julian Speroni has to work now though! Crystal Palace give the ball away cheaply in midfield, Aaron Lennon this time finds a pass to pick out Gylfi Sigurdsson lurking on the edge of the area, he swivels and fires in a rising drive which forces Speroni nito a one-handed save.
Almost the opener at Selhurst Park.
HALF-TIME - Crystal Palace 0-0 Tottenham
14:37 PENALTY TO SPURS - Crystal Palace 0-0 Tottenham - Paulinho has a penalty appeal waved away as he goes down, but moments later referee Mark Clattenburg does give them a penalty as Aaron Lennon's cross clearly hits Dean Moxey's hand.
14:38 GOAL - Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham - Roberto Soldado (Pen 50 mins) - Record signing Roberto Soldado steps up to take it, and cool as you like slots it into the right-hand corner. Lovely penalty, and the £26m man is off and running.
14:45 SUBSTITUTION - Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham - And it's Mousa Dembele who comes off for Spurs, Etienne Capoue is on for his Tottenham debut.
15:11 SUBSTITUTION - Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham - Roberto Soldado is replaced by Jermain Defoe.
15:14 SUBSTITUTION - Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham - Excellent play from Jermain Defoe, running from deep and holding off three challenges before winning a corner. Spurs make their final change as Younes Kaboul returns from injury in place of Danny Rose.

Premier League new boys Crystal Palace kick off life back in the top flight with a London derby against Tottenham.

Crystal Palace are among the favourites to go straight back down to the Championship after their play-off final success last season.

The Eagles begin life without last season's star man Wilfried Zaha following his switch to Manchester United.

Ian Holloway has been busy trying to strengthen his squad and he has taken a gamble on signing Dwight Gayle from Peterborough.
The absence of last season's top scorer Glenn Murray to long-term injury will be a big loss to Holloway, but he will be able to rely on proven Premier League performer Kevin Phillips after he signed a new deal.

Tottenham's pre-season has been dominated by speculation over Gareth Bale's future and they will be happy to get back to matters on the pitch this weekend.

Spurs narrowly missed out on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last season and a top four finish is their top target this season.

Andre Villas-Boas has made some astute signings in the transfer window with Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli all boosting the quality of the Spurs squad.

If Spurs manage to keep prize asset Bale they could even mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season.

Tottenham
Wantaway Tottenham forward Gareth Bale has been ruled out of Sunday's game at Crystal Palace because of a foot injury.

Defender Jan Vertonghen is doubtful due to an ankle injury he suffered in pre-season while midfielder Lewis Holtby misses out with a knee injury.

Striker Emmanuel Adebayor will not feature as he only returned from compassionate leave on Wednesday while midfielder Scott Parker is expected to be left out of the squad as he is in talks with other clubs about a move away from White Hart Lane.

Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway will not be able to hand a debut to summer signing Jerome Thomas when the Eagles welcome Tottenham to Selhurst Park for their Premier League curtain-raiser on Sunday.

The 30-year-old winger suffered an ankle injury in a friendly against Lazio last weekend and is set to be sidelined for at least two weeks.

However, a host of other new signings could be in line for their competitive debuts with the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Elliott Grandin likely to be involved. Captain Paddy McCarthy (groin) is back in training but will not be ready while Glenn Murray (knee) and Yannick Bolasie (hamstring) are also absent.

Gareth Bale will miss Tottenham's opening Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace but boss Andre Villas-Boas is still hopeful he will stay.

Bale, 24, has interested Real Madrid this summer but is out of Sunday's game with a foot injury.
Villas-Boas confirmed the forward's absence before explaining "he's been out injured for most of pre-season".

"We've been very, very clear regarding the player and our willingness to hold on to him," he told Sky Sports.
"Obviously in football anything can happen in the end but this is a player we cherish a lot and has helped us progress and ideally we want to continue with him."

There has been intense speculation this summer that Real Madrid could complete a world-record transfer for the Welshman but the Spanish side's public pursuit hasangered Spurs manager Villas-Boas.

The La Liga outfit's manager Carlo Ancelotti said that the clubs were in talks but no deal has been agreed and Bale is yet to publically declare his intentions.

Bale played the first half of Tottenham's pre-season friendly against Swindon on 16 July but not played since for the White Hart Lane club and also missed Wales' 0-0 draw with Republic of Ireland on Wednesday despite linking up with his international team-mates.

"He was involved in the games against Brentford and Swindon but not any others, for different reasons; he pulled a muscle in his gluteus that prevented him from being involved for two weeks and he's been complaining of pain in the foot," Villas-Boas added.

"I think the most natural thing is to see him not involved against Palace."

Hoping for Soldado to get off the mark in this game, think there will be quite a few goals as Holloway's teams don't know how to defend

Yay first match thread of the season proper!

Should be a good game for us, Palace will be quite open and we will be tested defensively, but we will get chances going forward for sure. Could be a good game for one or two of our new signings to get a goal or an assist and really bed themselves in.

1-3 Spurs, Soldado x2, Paulinho.

Cardiff signed Caulker for a club-record fee, Hull did the same with Thudd, so who do we sell to Palace for above £4.5M (according to Wikipedia) to complete this hat-trick?!

Did we not buy Chris Armstrong for 4.5 M from Palace? Not too sure what we paid for Routledge...

Gotta imagine they'll be fired up for the first game, at home after achieving promotion. Gotta weather the early storm and then counterpunch them right in the baby maker

Last time I was this excited for a season was first full year under Ramos. We made what I thought were some great signings that window, Bent was banging them in for fun, and we were battering teams in the preseason. We then went up to the Riverside and got hammered by Middlesbrough.

Hoping I'm not falling into that trap this off season. I don't think you can underestimate the time it takes for multiple new signings to gel as a team.

Think a narrow 2-1 win or a 1-1 draw is on the cards. Don't forget Holloway's last side smashed Wigan 5-0 on opening day last time they were promoted.
