Very very prima facie.

Just because the directors say it's OK isn't a great sign of legality, especially if they're in on it - with no intention to get caught.

If we're looking at Redknapp, for instance, him and Terry Brown (and assorted cronies) were as thick as thieves with the whole Rio transfer.

"Where's our Rio money gone?" was the banner at the time I believe.

Stoof - I entirely agree. But I'd better not say anything more, prima facie and lawyers and all that...

Yeah, its all opinions, mate. I totally respect that.

But how about this:

DOF sells Berba for 33m as you say. Even though we expected 30m. With the extra 3m (ok, 2.7m after his 'bung', I mean, 'share'), we buy a new player that scores 20 goals a season. Giving the DOF 300k for that kind of 'adding value' seems ok to me.

As I understand it, Kelmsley has made the club money not from player activity, but from property development. Personally, if I were Levy I think it's reasonable to say "Thanks very much, Paul. Here's a few hundred grand. Might want to stock up on Slim Fast and muesli bars rather than spending it all at Pizza Hut."

Morality in football is a much bigger debate than here and I fully agree with your sentiments towards agents.

I just think that 'incentives' are only there to get the person to perform better to acheive the companies goals. Rather like sales commission. Why would a sales person bother with making calls and going to meetings if they went home with the same wage packet regardless of the rupees they brought to the business?

Obviously, this applies more to Kelmsley than Redknapp, but I'm sure you appreciate the point.

Point well made.

Perhaps it's the industry I've spent my life working in where I've never been blooming well "incentivized" for anything. Staff motivation in telly and journalism seems to consist of managers asking you to work 70-hour weeks and then saying: "there's a hundred smart, young things out there who are gagging to work even more hours for even less money than you, and I'd like to shag some of them. So bleeding well get on with it."

No, but seriously, my bigger concern is the cultural one. If you look at George Graham's well-documented bungs at the Goons, there were actually two problems: firstly, there's the illegal payments; amd secondly, look at the crap he bought for those bungs - particularly, Pal Lyderson. Once an individual can make serious extra money from buying and selling players, there's always the temptation to do the deal.

My personal view is that it's fine for players and coaches to be incentivized for reaching certain targets - eg winnning a cup or getting into the Champions League. But I'd hate to see routine financial transactions be part of an incentivization culture at the club in the way that it allegedly was with Redknapp at the Spammers.

Absolutely.

And as someone who has 'crossed the floor' from sales to editorial, I know more than most how nice it is to be 'incentivised', but that at the end of the day, there is much more to life - like job satisfaction and a sense of making a difference, rather than persuading people to part with cash when there is a chance they might not actually want to.
