This is incredibly sad. So young, and a man at the peak of physical fitness. Can happen to anybody.

Jarque and Puerta dead, De La Red having a heart attack and surviving, there does seem to be some sub standard medical equipment at Spanish clubs as it seems extraordinary that these conditions are going undetected as players have annual medicals and so on

RIP though, 26 is no age to die, was shocked to hear the news

Unfortunatly, it could be the amount of football played and the high standard of fitness now demanded by coaches thats to blame IMVHO

Surely "high standards of fitness" would include proper and serious concern for the conditions of the players heart? I mean it's all well and good to indulge in regular cardio-vascular exercises, to target your diet around keeping your insides shiney and new but it's quite apparent that there is either too much pressure on players to be as fit as is humanly possible, then another 10% on top, or there's a problem with the screening and tests that are done by clubs' medical staff.

These things are rarely completely unpredictable - history of family heart problems, little signs that can give away various conditions, they need to be highlighted and dealt with accordingly before the player has to have a near death experience (like De La Red or our very own youngster, Radwan Hamed).

So, he joins the growing list of Foe, Puerta, Abdelwahab & Feher(amongst others i expect) of notable players to fallen foul of a weak heart, in some form or another, whilst still too young.

RIP.
