I would rather us promote and develop Dane Scarlet before he slips through the cracks. I saw enough of him last season playing in a cameo role to see that he is quick, confident and very intelligent on or off the ball.

Let Scarlett develop in conference league. He's got plenty of time. To choose Scarlett over bringing in Ings is madness in my opinion.

The kid is 17...

Let's give him a chance to develop without any pressure - buying Ings allows us to do that.

You could easily play a 4-3-3 on paper, that in attack becomes a 4-2-4 with Doherty/Reguilon wide one side (with Hojbjerg covering wide to make the 4 at the back) and Son wide the other side. Both of those wide options would also have time and space to charge into the box and fill space that is created by whichever of Ings/Kane drops deep.

Or, Ings and Son stay wide in defence and when attacking, Kane drops deep and Ings and Son come narrow with fullbacks pushing on to play an attacking 4-3-1-2.

Basically, when you have versatile and intelligent players who compliment each other, you can make a number of systems work and keep teams on their toes.

If I was saints I’d rather let him go on a free next summer than sell him for £20m. He’ll be worth much more than that in goals this season.

Son is not a 442 winger. I think Ings makes a lot of sense, but it will take some creativity to figure out how best to fit all the pieces together.

kane as a 10 hes better than all the other options we have there.

4231 Kane behind Ings Son left Bergwijn right.

But Ings have to agree to that...
I think a move this season helps his case a long way for a WC squad berth.
Especially, if Nuno convinces him, that he can team up both Kane-Ings for this season and give him sizeable game time

Yup, if Ings wants to go to the world cup he'll have to move to one of the big boys.

Southgate won't consider him otherwise IMO.

Why does Ings have to agree to stay if he’s under contract?

If Ings doesnt buy into Southampton plans, it wont work. Especially with him rejecting new contract and being on last year.
I believe its a given, he will leave Saints this year.

I think Southgates reliance on Kalvin Phillips kinda debunks that theory. Also remember Ben White ( Brighton) and Connor Coady (Wolves) were in the squad

Just out of tribal spite I would have used Declan Rice rather than Phillips as the example!

Went with Phillips because he seemed more relied upon than Rice. In retrospect, Rice was probably the best choice for an easy dig

If we genuinely want to play two up top, then surely we need more than just Kane and Ings otherwise we're an injury away from having to switch formations or dip into the youth team. Both Kane and Ings are fairly injury prone too.

Don't get me wrong, it'd be nice to give minutes to Parrott and/or Scarlett but to have them so close to first team action seems like poor planning.

I like the idea of signing Ings, but something doesn't quite add up for me. I'd be very worried that 'bought to play with Harry' would become 'bought to replace Harry' by the end of the window.

Maybe he wants the option to play 2 up top, not that hes planning to. He could get away with Kane and Ings with Son as back up for either. That would leave Scarlett or Parrott for cup games and some minutes here and there

Everyone was saying this for Parrott not to long ago. Went out on loan couldn’t buy a goal in championship or league 1. Scarlet like parrott needs games out on loan. Ings on 2yr deal perfect stop gap for that

Yeah, so we're lying to Ings to get him to sign on the dotted line then as soon as he does BANG - UNDERSTUDY.

This I'm more on board with. Being tactically flexible and sometimes running with two strikers, sometimes one would be nice. I'm just not sure Ings would feel the same way.

It might not work but it still doesn’t mean saints need him to agree to it they have him under contract for year. I think saints should/will want more for their best player.
