R.I.P To one of the greatest players in our clubs history. I remember my dad waxing lyrical about big Dave Mackay for hours. A truly great player and a winner wherever he went.

RIP Dave.

Was my dads favourite player ever, shame you don't get many footballers who have his toughness and determination any more.

Was gutted last night when I first read about it before the official announcements and this morning it still makes me emotional.

There are footballers, 'ballers, hardmen, defensive stalwarts, midfield generals, pass masters, heroes, leaders and legends.

And then there's Dave Mackay.

If ever there were a man you could be forgiven for believing was truly indestructible, it was him.

Gone but never to be forgotten. Our greatest ever.

RIP Dave

I photographed a dinner where he was the main speaker a few years ago. Really quiet and nice man. Loved spurs and told many stories about himslef and tottenham

A man, that many decades on, we are told by those who saw him that we have never replaced in our side. An embodiment of not just one of our greatest ever teams but of our whole club. I don't think you can sum that up in a few words.

Both imposing and majestic; a legend.

Rest in Peace Dave Mackay.

Obviously never saw him play, but his name is synonymous with grit, determination and professionalism, and it's name that will always be linked to the club due to his greatness as part of the double-winning team.

I hope he gets a massive ovation tomorrow night and I hope we honour him with a performance he'd have been proud of.

RIP.

I'm typing with tears in my eyes.

I knew he was ill so it was only a matter of time. Even so, the news of his dying has hit me hard because he was a part of my own life story.

Thank you Dave for the memories, both on and off the pitch. I was privileged to watch you play and to know you.

May you RIP.

In that era Dave Mackay was the best player I ever saw play in person

Pre broken leg Dave was phenomenal. No other Spurs or British player could compare.

On the World scene Pele caught the eye obviously but he and Dave were not the same kind of great player.

If it was a choice between the two then Dave Mackay would take the ribbon.

Pele needed the other great players around him.

Dave Mackay often carried other supposed great players on his shoulders.

Not just a courageous winner but a very skilled footballer.

Such courage, such determination, such a flag bearer in every single game he played.

My heart is broken.

If any of the players needed motivation to do something towards the end of the season then I hope the memory of this legend invokes them. Not old enough to see him play, but showered with old VHS of great spurs teams in which this man was prominent. Loved hearing him talk about us even up to the last few years and will miss seeing him on match days at half times on the odd occasion he was down.

RIP to a real club legend.

I'm reading these tributes at work, with tears in my eyes.

Older fans of other clubs have also been warm & generous in their tributes to Dave. He really does seem to stand out to many, not just Spurs fans, as an icon of football as it once was.

Hadn't seen the news this morning, logged in here, saw the thread title and my heart sank. Always sad when an ex-Spurs player dies, but this has really upset me.

Like many on here he was way before my time, but you can't be a Spurs fan without knowing how important a figure he was for us.

My Dad is going to be absolutely gutted. He once described him to me as like Roy Keane, but with more talent and without being a ****. 'Nuff said.

The word legend is often over used, but not in this case. A true Spurs legend. RIP Dave.

I was born in1973 so never saw that great team, or the great man that was Dave Mackay. I became a Spurs fan following my grandad who told me all about that team...my Daad is Arsenal but he saw the double side a lot and they both told me what great players theyall were John White, Cliff Jones et al but the one they both held in the highest regard was Dave Mackay. My Grandad died when I was about 18/19 and about ten years ago I decided to educate myself on the history of our club and have since read many books and biographies. Dave Mackays included.

I think it is the knowledge of players and men like him that make a lot of todays greed and diving and disrespect in the game all that more unpaletable.

Any of the younger fans on here who didnt get to see these greats I would recommend reading any of the many books written about that time and that team and those men. All I know now is if there is a heaven and a God his football team just got a whole lot stronger RIP Dave and say hello to Bill, Bill, Ron John, Bobby and Danny from us

Make sure you tell us all the tales when you can Cosmic. Sure we'd all love to hear them.

I have done so already in older threads tsh if you want to find them but I was contacted by a family member of Dave's and asked not to give personal memories, even to delete the ones I'd posted which I haven't as they are my memories and I feel they are precious and a part of my own life story. Out of respect, I will say no more but I will leave it with an abiding memory I posted on SC some years back. "I danced with Dave Mackay."
