The best Spurs player of all time for me. Never saw him play in the flesh but having seen the footage and grown up with the stories I'm sure he was a mighty man and an indomitable leader. Very sad day.

Sorry if I've missed something that everyone else knows.........did your Dad play for Spurs???

Yes, but nothing major. Squad player in the early 60s but didn't get a look in as players never really got properly injured. He has a few team photos dotted around the house. Ended up at Barnet in the 70s. Still keeps in contact with a few players from those times...and has loads of stories to tell....he also says Nicholson was a bstard to work for!!

That image, of him and Bremner, is just crying out to be made into a stature and put, pride of place, on the walk up to the new stadium.

My granddad telling me stories about him was one of the most enticing things I heard about Spurs as a litt'lun. Iconic player. Shall be missed.

Was too young never got to see him play. I got to meet him and his wife Isabelle about 15 years ago. The nicest most down to earth people youd ever meet. He was surprised anyone over here knew who he was.

Thoughts go out to Isabelle and the Mackay family...

I remember reading somewhere that he never really liked that photo.

I think he felt that it stereotyped him as a hard man when, in fact, he was so, so much more than that. By all accounts, he had great skill, a fine reading of the game and a ferocious shot to go with his teak toughness and fiery competitiveness.

There's a lovely story about a ball court skills exercise that the coach, Eddie Bailey, had devised that was meant to be really difficult. Having listened to all the instructions, Dave Mackay stepped up first, nonchalantly took a ball and performed the full sequence perfectly before turning to a stunned Eddie Bailey with a twinkle in his eye and asking, "Do you mean like that?"

So if he is to have a statue at the new WHL (and he certainly should), then I'm sure that he would have far preferred that it be of him scoring a goal or lifting the FA Cup etc.
