Top 10: World's greatest ever footballers

David Beckham voted world's greatest footballer ever - ahead of Ronaldo and Messi - in UK fans poll

David Beckham has been voted the world's best footballer ever, in a poll for UK fans on soccersuckers.co.uk, reports the Daily Star.
The former England captain, who represented Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain during his glittering career, topped a star-studded list with an impressive 29 per cent of the votes cast.
Beckham retired from football in the summer, after helping PSG to the Ligue 1 title in 2012/13.
The 38-year-old represented his country on 115 occasions, ranking him second on the Three Lions list of most capped internationals behind Peter Shilton (125 caps), but has the most appearances of any outfield England player.
Also among the top 10 Soccer Suckers list was Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker was perhaps the biggest surprise inclusion, placing higher than world-renowned players like Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Wayne Rooney.

Of course it's biased.

He wasn't the best footballer, but he was bloody decent in his prime.

He was and is an absolute legendary role model / person to admire within football though - just his presence changed the atmosphere in a stadium, was very unreal watching England play and Beckham coming on, just created an amazing atmosphere with him literally just running onto the pitch.

Weird how that worked.

Utmost respect for the guy, there was three year period where he carried england almost single handedly with a string of mom performances.
He came back so well after the argie game and maximised his strengths, as a role model over the last ten years without doubt he's head and shoulders above anyone else.

Best crosser of the ball I've seen, and up there amongst the best passers, especially his long range passing. But obviously nowhere near being the best ever player.

Proof that the general public are stupid and can't be trusted.

Reminds me of a quote from Super Hans in Peep Show : "People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people, Jeremy."

Sorry folks, but George Best could well have been the best ever although my personal favourite, absolutely unique and amazing and I saw him in action when he was in his late 40s and he could still dribble the ball down the wing as though it was superglued to his boots, will always be Stanley Matthews.

I especially liked it when he cheated on his Mrs when she was bringing his two kids up.

I joke of course. He was a great player and a surprisingly good leader (I never thought he was Captain material when they named him England Captain tbh) but during his whole time at United, he wasn't even the best player there and throughout his time at Real Madrid he wasn't the best player there either.

Nah, he wasn't the best player, but he had an aura about him, that certainly raised things.

Did he actually cheat on his wife?
Thought it was all bollocks...

No, it wasn't bollox. So for that reason he's probably not the most fantastic role model ... plus he's far too caught up in the cult of celebrity which is not great to emulate imo.

Anyway. Not here to Beckham bash, but there are far far greater role models to be found tbh

Such as? Its very rare that sporting heroes are perfect off the pitch but Beckham always conducted himself with class to me.

Can't think of a better role model.

I can't find anywhere that this 'cheating' was confirmed, and regardless of that, if he did have a fumble with some hot thing, he wouldn't be the first, and it's hardly a criminal act.

In terms of his behaviour, it's impeccable - always.

I think a better role model would be someone who hasn't cheated on his wife. Paul Scholes was a better footballer and managed to avoid making headlines for negative reasons during his entire career, I'd argue he's a better role model.
