Only caught the very back end of it but it was just on SSN that Defoe can't play at the weekend because his transfer isn't complete still.

Great news as he would have been desperate to score against us. Isaid to my mate last night I didn't think he was eligible and he disagreed. I can look like a proper smart arse now

Does this mean he's basically on loan and after bagging another 10 or so goals for Pompey we'll get him back full of confidence next year.

HR said on SSN that it was a loan deal on Jan 31 because they needed the Benjani money from Citeh to buy Defoe. When it came through they converted it to a permanent deal. I think this happened a week or so later. Frankly I don't understand why Defoe is ineligible to play against us if he joined Pompey on a permanent basis.

if it's a permanent deal the club can't put any clauses preventing him from playing, that loophole was changed after the Tim Howard incident last season.

This thought crossed my mind, with regard to the problems involved with the permanent transfer being held up because of Man Citys ineptness, but it means that Kanooo Feet will play against us, and he has an excellent scoring record against us, the Tosser!

i guess the whole mess of the Benjani deal not being done before 12 has meant that both these msut still be classed as loan deald, but all clubs have agred to sell once the window re opens for a perminent deal

i liek the idea of being able to get him back though  but he wouldnt come, he has first team football, and wont get that with us, no matter what he does

This is now on the Pompey site:

Jermain Defoe will not be eligible to play for Pompey against his former side Spurs on Saturday because of a rule change in the summer.

Defoe, who has scored six goals in as many games since signing on the last day of the transfer window in January, cannot make his return to White Hart Lane because a player who originally signs on loan and then completes a permanent move is not allowed to play against the club he left in the same season.

A Portsmouth FC spokesman said: “Clearly we are not happy about the situation and were under the impression it only applied to goalkeepers, following a similar situation last year with Tim Howard playing for Everton against Manchester United.

“Jermain was only signed on a loan deal due to time restraints on transfer deadline day and the deal was made permanent soon after.

“Spurs themselves were under the impression he was playing and clearly the rule needs to be looked at again as we will not be the only club to be affected by this.

“We have tried to get the ruling overturned and have lots of support from the other Premier League clubs but nothing can be done until the next shareholders’ meeting in April.”

So despite being clever and restructuring the deal as a loan to avoid any Benjani mishaps, they've shot themselves in the foot re: him playing us. Amusing.

So technically this must mean that he's not a Pompey player officially until the next window opens.

Sulley Muntari and Papa Boob Dad also out, through suspension. Judas is injured and is a doubt. I would say that would be good for us but a lot of people (including me) believed that the Man Shitty game would be a lot easier 'cause they had Micah Richards and Hamann out, but then we went on to lose.
