So technically this must mean that he's not a Pompey player officially until the next window opens.

Does this mean Daniel doesn't have the transfer fee in the bank earning interest until we splash it (and more) on David Villa?

Yanno, you make a number of references to David Villa (as do I), would you like us to sign him this summer?

Not at all. I expect the money has been paid. But seeing as how you can only sign players when the window is open, this is just a pre-dated transfer.

I have no doubt in my mind it's all sewn up, but the technicalities of it I expect go along the lines of: when the window shut at the end of January and all business was declared concluded, Defoe was on loan. He can sign for Portsmouth at any time, dating the transfer as of the first date of the next window and financially completing it, and he will become an official Pompey player as of that opening day.

My take on it, anyway.

The two main Spanish-based strikers we're continually linked to are Villa (legendary name for a Spurs player ) and Diego Milito.

Milito is a good all-round striker, who can hold the ball up and scores a lot of goals. He would be able to play the Berba fulcrum role - though not as sublimely as Berba...

Villa is small, fast, very skilful, a great finisher, and will have lots of CL clubs after him this summer. He could only play with Berba, not with Keano.

So, Milito would probably be the more pragmatic signing, as he could play with both Berba and Keane. We could sell Bent, and could rotate three very good strikers (when players needed a rest etc).

Villa would be competing directly with Keano for a place - as Defoe was - and this might cause a repeat of the problems we've seen this season.

So, I would love to see David Villa at WHL, but as he'd be competing directly with Keano for a place it would probably cause squad problems. It's a tricky one. I'm sure Ramos will be in for him, and getting him would be a great coup, but...

I suspect you're 100% correct, and the fact that Shift 'n Shoot can't play us against us is the icing on the cake.

I agree with everything you said but didn't get the answer I was looking for so'I'll answer the question more directly.

Presuming Berbatov stays what 1st choice front pairing would you like to see at Spurs next season?

Berba and Villa would, in principle, be a dream pairing. If he was available, I'd probably go for it and sell Keano.

Such a decision would be both unfair on Keano - he's been outstanding for the last 18 months - and very fair to him - as his current form would probably get him a transfer to a CL club and a better contract.

It would also be a big risk, as Villa has never played outside La Liga, and would inevitably need time to adapt.

If we could sign Villa and keep Keano, that would be great. But Berba and Villa would start as the number one pairing, for me.

He is a permanent pompey player but if a player joins a club on loan then signs permanently his still ineligible to play should the two teams meet.

I agree with all of that.

In theory Berbs & Villa would be the best striking pair around and would ouse class.

I don't think that Villa would have trouble adapting to the Premiership, in fact I think his game is perfect for the Premiership.

The only point I disagree with is about being fair, for me it isn't about fairness its about what will take us to the next level and we can improve all over the pitch to do that. There are clearly other priorities and especially in midfield but for me if we have a genuine chance of bringing in Villa (which according to Guillem balague we have) then we should go for it.

I look around and I wonder who would be our competition for Villa?

i don't think Real or Barca are realistic moves for him (unless Etoo leaves Barca) so then looking at England...

He is completely the wrong type of forward for Chelsea and I can't see any chance of them being interested. United have forwards of a similar nature in Rooney & Tevez so I can't see them being interested (if anything they need a target man). Arsenal I can't see it with their group of strikers.

Leaving Liverpool, I can honestly see in this country Liverpool being our only competition. However there is a very good chance that Rafa will go this summer and that will surely leave us in pole position to fight it out with 1 or 2 Italian clubs and i think we could win that battle.

I think there is every chance David Villa will sign for Spurs this summer.

Sweet! He'd probably would've scored otherwise. Will be interesting to see what players we'll put out thou... reckon some will be rested, Zokora and Chimbonda would be on my list at least.

He would be a great signing. Actually, of the EPL clubs, I think the goons might go for him. Villa could play with Adebayor, and Eduardo may very well never be a top class player again. Wenger likes "poachers", even if his judgement - Franny Jeffers :duh: - has often been crap.

Rafa would also probably go for him, and Villa does play with Torres for Spain.

I think the likes of Milan and Real Madrid need a central striker who can hold up the ball, so they're far more likely to try to steal Berba off us than go for Villa. Barca are more of a wildcard. Rijkaard will probably be off, and if Mourinho got the job, I'm sure they'd switch formations. But again, Mourinho would be almost certain to sign Drogba, so again no need for Villa.

So, I agree, I think we have a very decent chance of snagging Villa in the summer.

They say he's struggling with injury but I'd love Campbell to play. Has he ever played well against us? He's one player that I think really gets affected by stick from the crowd. It bounces off most players but I've consistently seen that Judas c-unit whither and die under the heckles.

Is Mendes injured? What about Pamarot, and Davis. F*ck me! How many of our lot have they got? Its like Fulham the other day - Keller, Konchesky, Davies, Murphy, Stalteri. We don't half churn them out.

So glad that Jermaine will not be allowed to play on Saturday. Hopefully he will walk on to the pitch before the game and be given a 'goodbye' ovation by the crowd. He was a model professional for Spurs and I still miss the possibility that when Keane has run his 65 minutes that JD will come on. Seeing Bent get ready to come on does not do it for me:(
When JD comes back next year to play for Pompey he will then be one of them although I would never rule out him coming back to WHL. Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinnsman, Micky Hazard, Alan Mullery and Ossie Ardiles all did it in a way, so why not JD?

Blatantly an underhand deal.

Bent 'Arry (funny it's him involved) has clearly pocketed 9m of The Gay Damek's cash (saying "I'll save you the trouble of a bank transfer or writing a cheque, Mr Gay Damek. Just pass me a fat brown envelope and I'll do the rest" then gone off and agreed a loan deal for JD, passing Sky Andrews a fat wedge of his cash). Spurs agree the loan as he will come back refreshed in the summer. At which point, Bent 'Arry will say to TGD "Boss, we only signed JD on a 5 month contract. Despite scoring 20 goals in 10 games, he went back to Spurs on a Bosman :shifty: ".

Alledgedly.
