I have heard from a friend of mine who does a lot of the air charter work for the FA that Defoe is on his way home from Poland as his dad died last night

Very sad if true

Very sad if true, was he ill ?

I have read that he was homeless and a bit of a junkie, again this was In the media so no idea how true it is. There was definitely a story somewhere about him selling a fathers day present from JD (a Gucci watch) so he could buy crack.

Doesn't really matter still very sad if true.

Sad for Defoe, although from all his interviews it sounds like his mother was his rock. Hodgson effectively left with 2 strikers for the opening group games, he must be sweating a bit...

I cannot imagine Defoe would miss the tournament because of this.

If it's true then maybe he will fly home for a day or two then go back. Defoe loves playing for England and major tournaments are few and far between. He has missed out a couple of times already too.

Sad for him obviously. Even if his old man was a 'wrong un' it's still his dad.

How sad - Defoe has had a fair bit of tragedy in his family over the past few years and now this. RIP to his dad.

He will be rejoining the squad later according to the latest news.

I sooo feel for Defoe - the guy deserves better luck than this.
He's a decent player, but just can't seem to get a break.

Reports suggest that he'll still be returning to the England squad, so hopefully he'll still make an impact.

RIP to his dad.

How sad for him, he seems to have suffered an awful lot of loss over the last few years.

I don't know how the reports of him returning to Poland in a few days are so sure. Death in the family is something that is very difficult to deal with and everyone reacts differently. Personally, I'd stay at home. but then I do not know the background in Defoe's situation.

My sincere condolences to Defoe and his family. No matter the past actions, the loss of a parent is tough. I hope he can find strength in the rest of his family.
