Gary Neville said at the half-way point of last season that Lovren was the signing of the season.
Lovren vs Spurs CBs:
Overall he looks very solid, certainly doesn't appear to be a downgrade, one thing that worries me though is his "Aerial Duels Won %" but I think he more than makes up for that with his exceptional number of interceptions, which are essential for a high-line system and it shows he has a good reading of the game.

The slating of Lovren was for good reason. He was awful for Lyon the season prior to his first with Southampton. 3 Reds, horrible defense errors (which were a direct result of a lack of concentration as opposed to a lack of physical ability) and he was so inconsistent.
It's just like Samuel Umtiti. People maintain he is a decent player (from a Spurs perspective) because he was decent against us. But, if you watch Umtiti, he's got a real tendency to be a mindless defender and sometimes his positional awareness is on level of Danny Rose.
I think that the game as we know it is changing so much that defending is much less about clearing the ball as far as you can, but more about having CB's that can carry the ball out of defence, have confidence on the ball and have reasonable dribbling ability...
For that reason, I think Lovren would be a terrific signing, to go with Vlad and Verts and maybe another new CB (would love Schar but not holding my breath), having those 4 at the back I think would be very good as they work well with a high line defence as they have pace to track back, whilst Dawson and Kaboul - (more so this past year) have limited pace and struggle with a high line, whilst Verts, Vlad, Lovren and Schar would be 4 great CB's to have...
I think we need to keep Dawson as an option.
We still have to play teams like West Ham and Stoke, and I wouldn't especially fancy any of Verts, Lovren or Chiriches up against a big battering ram like Carroll, Benteke or Lukaku. It's just about having a bit of variety/being equipped for all forward lines.
Soton fans seem to think Yakin will bring Schar with him as Lovren's replacement.
New news reports coming out saying Chiriches is leaving or might leaveWhere is all of this talk of Chiriches leaving for Lovren come from?
Doesn't that stem from the fake quotes that came out yesterday about him moving to Fiorentina?New news reports coming out saying Chiriches is leaving or might leave
Honestly have no clue, didn't know there were fake quotes or anything. My bad. Point still stands though, don't want to see Chiriches leaveDoesn't that stem from the fake quotes that came out yesterday about him moving to Fiorentina?

Vlad Chiriches deserves another season with us, he has all the qualities to be a top quality CB, the only problem I've had with him this season has been his attitude at times (although I could say that about half the squad after last season). For him to come over here and adjust the way he has from the Romanian League to the Premier League, I think he's done fantastically well, especially when you consider some of his performances such as Man Utd away. His bursts forward could serve us well as it brings another dimension to our attack, he's got a rocket of a shot on him, he's good with both feet and he can cover at RB and possibly LB.
