Demebele at left back?

Hi there. I appreciate this some may regard this as a slightly lunatic idea, but I've been thinking that we should try dembele at left back when rose can't play. (That danny rose is currently one of our more important players is insane, but that's a thread for another day)

This idea is posited on:

1) The way we're set up to play at the moment (and indeed have bought a whole squad to play) is based on wide midfielders cutting inside. You can argue the merits of this, but the fact is we'll almost certaintly be playing like this for the rest of the season and beyond. When playing this way, a lot of the width in our play has to be provided by full backs, basically by definition. If they don't provide that width, then our play is that much narrower and we are that much easier to defend against. For examples, see basically every game this season

2) There are good reasons to think Dembele could be a good left back. Defensively he's big, strong and quick, and good in the tackle. His defensive qualities will obviously be tested in different ways than as a deep lying centre mid, but he certaintly won't be bullied by anyone. He's already played out wide (albeit as a winger) for a good chunk of his career. Offensively, he can glide past people like a particularly graceful swan, and the one time I can remember him playing as a winger for us (against Liverpool last year) he absolutely bossed it. His main deficiencies appear to be his vision and range of passing, but that should be somewhat less of an issue as a full back compared to centre mid as his options will be more restricted

3) Once Capoue comes back, we have a truckload of good central midfielders. However our left backs currently conist of Danny Rose, who has a seemingly never ending injury and is ok but not exactly amazing. I love Jan as much as the next Spurs fan, but he's not a natural left back and will never provide the width we need. Naughton isn't even left footed, and isn't a particularly good left back

I reckon it's worth a try

Interesting argument but I really can't see it. He loses the ball too much and isn't fast enough in my opinion.

I think there would be a stronger argument for us to go 343 with Capoue(darting balls about) as one of the CB's and have two wing backs

vertonghen does a better job as an attacking full back than walker does on the other side imo. we have excellent options in rose and jan.

If we're looking for a fast, attacking left back that can overlap an inverted winger, the temporary solution should be Townsend.
And we know he can do that as he's played there before.
The only reason he's not been used there is that he's been our best attacking outlet and we don't have an instant, in form replacement in the right. So it's been easier to play Vertonghen there.

Who would your left wing-back be?

Vertonghen, Chiriches and Capou/Kaboul would be phenomenal back 3 but doesn't really solve the LB/LWB problem.

I've been tossing 352 around in my head with our strong midfield

I had the pleasure of a seat at ground level last Wednesday and I must say Dembele didn't look fit.
He seemed over weight, struggling and not the player we signed last year?

Its a no from me, I like the thinking outside of the box though. I think there should be more of it in football, too many managers are tactically not very bright or too pragmatic.

I also had a near ground level seat, unfortunately in with the Everton fans.

First time in years I'd been that close to the pitch and isn't it weird? Pienaar looked like a dwarf.

Would rather see Chadli at LB, someone put up a convincing argument the other day.

I'm not sure, I think moving a player out of position could be very disruptive to their form and rhythm as they have to adopt to this new position. Maybe if the roles are similar like LW RW CF, it could be worth a try but from CM to LB, it might be a stretch too far.
