I actually believe we've got more chance of winning the double again than signing one of the words best players in their prime years.

So do I, but signing Bale would not be one of the greatest acheivements since winning the Double. We've had multiple cups wins since then. Signing a player can't really be considered a sporting acheivement, can it? Or has capitalism finally eaten it's own cock and spat it out on a football field?

Even the Klinsmann signing was a bigger deal (for me anyway, and I'd imagine anyone who remembered what things were like back then would agree), than a potential Bale return could ever be.

Opinion - he could've laughed because his feathery pants tickled his swarthy, South American wang. I move to have this comment stricken from the conversation.

I couldn't really care to be honest. He isn't a Spurs player anymore. If he comes back then great (although those who try to sweep under the carpet that he had no ego or tried to act big time forget his powerplay during summer 13 over the transfer and during his last season he'd found his feet as the big fish in the pond and reduced his workrate to standing around in the No.10 position until someone gave him the ball, so he would have to buy in assuming the great team ethic continues) but once a player leaves they are history as far as I'm concerned, I'm only interested in those wearing a Spurs shirt and what they are doing. Some people, both here and on other social media, definitely are very tragic worshipping him still and dreaming of him coming back non-stop.

Were you a bit annoyed when he left??

buy back clause is the most pointless clause imo
if player wants to come he will, if he doesnt he wont, whether their is a clause is pretty pointless as player isnt legally obliged to stick to it

I think the point is that it puts a significant barrier to his coming back to another PL club

Why would we need him? Rose and Davies are having a really good season.

Has that joke been made? :shy:

For various reasons I can’t elaborate on, I was privy to some ITK on the ‘sale of Bale’ negotiations during Summer 2013 (see my posts back then if you can be bothered). I was told Madrid’s original hope was to pay cash for Bale to try and keep the quoted sum as low as possible (partly to assuage Ronaldo’s ego) and to not incur the extra from paying in instalments. At that time the players RM might have offloaded for good money – Cointrao, Benzema – wouldn’t leave so they ended up selling Ozil to Arsenal last minute. Modric to United was apparently another option. RM already owed a ton of money to Spanish banks.
This Contract contains two clauses I expected to see, in particular our first option on Bale up to the end of his 6 year contract (2019). This was as much to do with doubts about the player settling in Spain as RM trying to flip him back to the PL for a profit.

My thoughts now:
1. Would I want him back at Spurs? Absolutely. In 50 years of supporting Spurs he is without a doubt one of the players I’ve most enjoyed watching. Comparisons across decades are a waste of time. To say he was better or worse than Greaves, Gascoigne or Ginola ignores their eras, positions, pitches, teammates and a dozen other variables. To compare him with Mackay, Mullery or Mabbutt let alone Jennings or Lloris would be pointless. But of all the ecstatic moments that define a lifetime supporting Spurs, several in my top ten belong to Gareth Bale.
In that 2012-13 Season, he didn’t quite achieve what Maradona singlehandedly did with Napoli but Bale made us appear much better than we were. He’s a top player and, as far as I know, a decent guy. He’d fit into our current team beautifully and above all score or create the goals we need when our Plan A isn’t working (against the ‘Leicesters’ at home).

2. But I think the interesting thing is why this contract might have been leaked now? Incidentally, the typos are a useful trick sometimes secretly employed by the party typing the agreement (presumably Spurs or our lawyer on this occasion). By producing say 3 original copies – each with minutely different typos – it’s possible to track which version has been leaked without anybody else knowing. Just saying! What can appear as sloppiness is actually just a bit devious.
I doubt Bale’s side even retained a copy although he signed it mostly to commit himself to the Spurs option clause. I would have thought this has to be one of the two Club’s copies unless they have very dodgy solicitors.
If RM leaked it, what motive might they have had? If they know that a PL Club is about to bid for Bale, they want that first bid to be as ‘silly’ high as possible. So they put that information out into the public domain. Or Bale’s unhappy or Zidane doesn’t fancy him and they want to set off a bidding war with everything public. Alternatively, RM simply don’t want anybody bidding for Bale so they release it as a blocking tactic. Or, just thinking aloud, they want a particular Spurs player and if Bale is bid for, we only have 3 days to negotiate values in a kind of swap deal. Or it could be nothing to do with Bale? Maybe it’s the opening move in Ronaldo leaving? So I doubt it’s an ‘innocent’ leak but I don’t know what it means yet.
If Spurs (or both clubs jointly) leaked it, what motive might they have had? Spurs presumably wouldn’t want it leaked if a PL Club (City, Utd, Chelsea) was about to bid because they might bid silly money we couldn’t even think about matching. More likely, in my opinion, is that this could be the opening move in some protracted dance between RM and Spurs to do with one or more players and a transaction in the summer. Of course, all will be revealed in time …

BBC are saying that The Guardian is reporting Bale's agent has called for an investigation into the leak. Fits with my view above that I doubt it came from Bale's side.

Bale even said himself that he could see himself returning to Tottenham when his playing days are over at Real Madrid. So what makes you think he wouldn't want to come back and play with such a young talented squad? What a role model which will make the rest of the team play even harder. I would welcome him back with open arms.

Ronaldo's not stupid, he knows he's not the most expensive player in the world, it's Real Madrid that are trying to hide the fact that they grossly overpaid for a player.

How much did Spurs owe for Van the Man? Surely that makes the transfer figure even higher?

I doubt AS would print anything without RM knowing about it first - they are very close...
