Just watching the Spain vs Russia game and dispite his terrible commentry David Pleat just said something that interested me. Dick Advocaat turned down the Spurs job in favour of the South Korea national side which was at the start of the 2005/2006 season. Said he had an interview with Sir Alan Sugar and himself and everything. Turned it down for noddles apparently...... (Pleats poor humor not mine) Anybody know this?

They've both managed Korea, haven't they? Avacado took over from Hiddink.

Yeah i thought it was Advocaat as they were talking about when he dropped Arshavin from the Zenit side for going to a nightclub the night before a big game. And this season made him captain.

Surely Pleat will be sacked for making a racist joke? Going to Korea doesn't mean you are going just to eat noodles does it?

Pleat is a complete moron. He tried to make exactly the same 'joke' in Russia's match against the Dutch.

How the hell did this buffoon get to have such an influential role in a multi-million pound organisation?

Is it any wonder we spent most of his years as DoF in mid-table medciocrity with the odd relegation battle as the only highlight?

Yeah, what a moron, managing us to 3rd in the league and a cup final and semi. And even as DoF what a cock up he made in signing Robbo and Defoe.

How long ago was that? 21yrs ago??? Losing a Final to Coventry...blowing the best chance of winning the league in god knows how many years...and losing to the scum despite being in a very strong position over the 2 legs.

He also oversaw possiblly the worst period of our history, which we are now only recovering from...

Didn't he also sign Dean Richards, Paulo Tramezzani, Nicola Berti, Andy Sinton, Ramon Vega, Jose Dominguez etc etc etc

On balance I would say he did more bad than good...

Pleat is the guy who insitgated the changes that see us where we currently are. He was an excellent manager for us and did a very good job as D of F, though gets virtually no credit for it. He didn't sign the players you've listed. Half of them were signed before he was even in the job. You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Pleat was the one who realised we were wasting money buying old, injury prone players and set about dramatically improving our scoutning networks to find the best young British talent. He signed Doherty, Davies, Ehterington and Gardner. You may think these players are shit, but at the time we couldn't attract the best, though he tried to sign Rooney. As soon as Hoddle was sacked and he took charge of first team signings he brought in Defoe, Brown and set up the deal for Robbo. See what George Burley and Peter Reid have to say about the deals for Huddlestone and Lennon. They only speak about David Pleat and don't mention Arnesen. Arnesen and Comolli are suppossed to have great European scouting networks, yet to this day, it seems that all our best youngsters come from our scouting in this country, put in place by David Pleat.

The deals Pleat did for us when he was D of F transformed the club ethos and had a dramatic effect on our financial status. We finally had a squad of players who could actually take to the field each week and had a sell on value. See the returns we got on Pleat signings compared to anyone else's. The guy did so much for this club and half our fans just want to judge him on the fact he pronounces names poorly and his short stints as caretaker boss.

And is Alan Sugarl not involved with the club anymore?

nope, he didhold about a 20% stake in 05/06 but pleat had long gone by that point so even if sugar had been in a position to speak to potential managers, pleat wouldnt have had a clue. it can only be hiddink he was referring to, advocaat was merely mentioned cause they were talking about arshavin.

But these aren't Pleat signings, other than Doherty and Mckewan. They were signed by the managers. Pleat wasn't responsible for first team signings. The moment he was we bought Defoe, Brown and Robbo. Do you really thin an old fahioned manager like George Graham was going to agree to Pleat buying the players for him? You don't know what you're talking about.

am fairly certain mabizela and toda were hoddle signings. freund and sherwood weren't as bad as people made out. stick them in the team we have now and they might be hailed as our ball winning heroes.

chris perry was touted for england honours and had a good partnership with campbell before he fooked off. ginger pele was ginger pele. have to concede that one , although he was a bit of a cult hero...

So where were youngsters he was supposed to be recruiting? Apart from a spurt of signings that bought in Davies, Etherington, Doherty and Gardner...who else?

Please enlighten me...
