Did we miss a trick with Demichelis?

I know a lot of initial reaction will be, "is this a serious question?" but genuinely I feel like we've missed a trick here.

Now I'll admit, when his contract expired last season with Malaga, I wasn't on here or Twitter banging on doors to advertise this player for Spurs but after seeing how well he's adapted to the Premier League, I believe he could've been our unsung hero this season.

Like Dawson, Demichelis is far from blessed with pace however his eye for an interception has more than made up for this over the years and has seen him become a key figure for the likes of Bayern Munich, Malaga and more recently Manchester City as they push for their second Premier League title. His experience, Argentinian heritage and cultured development (overseen by the likes of Ottmar Hitzfield, Louis Van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini) may have also seen our slow, possession based build up play under AVB find more fluidity and success compared to when we've had to play Dawson or Capoue.

His experience and composure could also have translated towards many of our younger squad members, hopefully resulting in a reduction in the excessive number of soul-crushing score lines we've seen this season. He may have also benefited the introduction of Lamela to both England and the squad. Having someone else to talk to who's a fellow countrymen who also experienced a move to Europe at a young age may have benefited Lamela's confidence and integration.

At the very least if he accepted our offer and Man City came calling, Levy would've drove them up the wall to get a cool £5 million out of him.

Has he?

We most definitely missed a trick with Kjaer, he cost LOSC Lille £2m to buy from Wolfsburg, that's less than a third of what Cardiff paid to buy Caulker.

Demichelis though?

He was signed by Atletico Madrid, only joined City on deadline day. It wasn't clear whether he was going to be available, being under contract to a new team and all. Once the dispute was resolved and he was released, City - and his old manager, Pellegrini - got him. He was Pellegrini's hand picked signing.

Plus, he was dreadful for most of the season and the cause of a lot of City's insecurities at the back.

I'd say he has a mistake in him more so than Kompany. With Kompany he is confident, had he been in our defense he'd likely make even more errors. It's all about confidence and momentum. Demichelis with Kompany is to me right now what Dawson was with King. They need a real leader beside them to work much better.

I feel he's done a decent job, starting most matches for City who've challenged on 4 fronts this season and I don't feel he's been particularly worse than any of our CBs this season.

I'm sure if we had signed him, we would be calling for his head. We don't have too many bad players here. Just bad organisation.

I think saying dreadful is rather unfair considering I feel he's been rather solid and the with all the media attention Man City get with challenging for the PL and playing in the Champions League, you get pundits like the all-knowing Robbie Savage calling him "the weak link" when most of Man City's problems this season have been down to their disjointed spine due to injuries and loss of form of the likes of Aguero, Hart and Kompany.

Is no one as much of a fan as I am of his luscious hair? ;)

I hate having the unpopular opinion...:banghead:

wouldn't know what Savage says, I don't have UK tv.

He was clumsy in the tackle, giving away penalties vs Barca and Wigan. And caused a mix up vs Sunderland in the Carling Cup. High profile mistakes. Individual errors.

So, the answer is still no.

Was he ever linked to us? I don't remember him being linked

He went to Man City who pay so much in fees and wages we could never compete

I don't get the relevance of asking if we missed a trick - you could say that about any player in the World if you want to say did we miss a trick by not getting in there before a bigger team who got him

Did we miss a trick by not signing Ronaldo before Utd knew of him? Or Messi before he went to Barca from Argentina etc etc

It's not the same as Suarez for example who we know we were linked to and had scouted but decided against signing for reasons known only to Harry and his advisers

If we were linked to him, scouted him and decided against signing him before City's interest then fine its a discussion worth having. If however he's just a player you think would be good for us and wish we'd signed before Man City then its as pointless as suggested we missed a trick by not signing any top player at any top side before they went to them.

He's been really good, but I think he got railed by Match of the Day once or twice so everyone decided he was shit.

So that's the automatic opinion you get from people who don't actually watch much football.

Even that clip where he floored Messi, he was sold down the river by IIRC Kompany & had to chase back. Kompany has had far more errors in him this year but he's in the Premiership team of the year... Go figure!

Not sure we can really call it missing out if City bid for him with their money and Pellegrini wanting him.

He simply wasn't an option for us.
